Left my gas cap at a Flying J somewhere in Utah. Wally World has both vented and unvented that will fit. Which is correct for a 1997 F53 460 TBI?
Thanks for your help.

Did some online research and although I couldn't find a difinitive answer, I believe it should be a non-vented cap. On my chassis there is a small hose running from the tank to the filler neck in addition to the fuel fill hose. Assuming this is a vent hose, a vented gas cap would not be required.
I did drive over a hundred miles with no cap at all and didn't get a check engine light.

IMHO it should also be a locking cap. To help keep the honest, honest.

1997 Chassis have OBD I, 1998 and newer have ODB II.
Consider yourself lucky that you don't have to worry about setting a loose or missing gas cap code with the OBD I system.
OBD II can be a nightmare if you have any problems with the fuel evap system.
Both systems have there pros and cons.

It has been a long time sense Ford has used a vented gas cap, before 1982 anyway.
The gas cap should be non-vented with a one-way check valve. The check valve lets air into the tank so fuel can be drawn out by the fuel system but will not let any fuel vapors out into the outside air, an EPA thing (law). The fuel vapors go to the charcoal canister in the engine compartment to be burned when the engine reaches full operating temperature and is not at idle or WOT.

The auto specialist at walmart didn't know a simple question like that .
Seriously, go to NAPA or simular and they can help.

I left mine at a gas station too. Went to Ford and bought a new one. The new one has a small "cord" attached to it. Drilled a small hole, pushed the rubber grommet in. Now, the new Ford spec cap is attached.

That's the problem with an after market cap, no tether. I got a locking cap from autozone, I leave my keys in the cap so I can't drive off without reinstalling it first.
