97 Ford F53 E4OD Trans....

While backing up a steep hill to park transmission fluid started running out the bottom of bell housing.(about 2 Qts)....I let it set a few days and added 1 quart of fluid and no leaks anywhere while running and trans shifts fine.
I doubt it fixed it self or does it have a overflow opening it could of leaked out. Im afraid to head out and break down on the road....Any ideas? Thanks,Walt

Typical of that transmission. Something about the way the fluid flows during reverse will push fluid past the front seal under certain conditions, usually only if backing up under higher load (uphill) or a long distance. Chalk it up to experience and try not to duplicate that hard reversing situation.

Had the same issue on our Class C with the E4OD. It's the front transmission seal. When they get hot the pressure in the convertor pushes the seal out of position. When the fluid cools the seal sometimes goes back into place. Ours did it the day we bought it and drove 150 miles home in the 105 deg heat. Some say it will be ok to drive but we had the transmission rebuilt to be sure we wouldn't be broke down on the road somewhere. A year later sold it and bought our Class A

It's a temperature issue. Mount a small 12 volt fan on the tranny cooler, with a 170 deg. snap action thermostat and the problem goes away.
