Even if it did bolt up OK how would you control it?
The drivetrain computer in your '99 wouldn't be able to connect to and control the 6-speed. Everything is electronically controlled and interconnected (engine, transmission, emissions sensors, etc).

It's possible. I'll bet it will cost quite a bit more than a brand new motorhome, but it can be done.

He did say ANY 6 speed. Not necessarily a 6R140.
6R140s are "clutch to clutch", correct? Making a stand alone, non-Ford controller a near impossibility, right mark?
The E350/450 still uses the 2 valve V10 motor. A controller from one of those could be made to work, but you'd have to update the engine to drive by wire, making it nearly a whole powertrain swap. You could do that with a 3 valve/6 speed.
Super Duties had a 6 speed manual. It's top ratios aren't any better that the 4 speed and the you lose the torque multiplication of the torque converter. Not that you'd want/be able to put a manual in a Class A...
Allison 6 speeds bolt to standard belhousings, but I don't think anyone ever put one behind a Ford V10. Wouldn't be impossible to mate up, and the trans would run off it's own stand alone controller. Might take a gear swap to make use of all six ratios though.
And for what gain? Closer ratios would be nice in the mountains. Fuel economy would be a wash. And boy would it cost a lot.

I was thinking that the 6 speed would increase mileage. I was only thinking the ford 6R140 because it is being used on the V10 so figure it would bolt up. I was looking to see how that trans was connected to the PCM/ECM through the TCM (trans controller) the harness wouldn't be too difficult but if the trans required a bus line to the PCM/ECM my current one wouldn't work. Now if money wasn't a problem I would either swap the V10 for a complete engine-trans being either a gas or oil burner. There is an Allison trans which the 6R140 is based off of but those are really for 4x4s. I did read some where that the 6R140 has a stand alone TCM but most of this was written back in 12' so no updated info on the swap. The base question would be, is it worth it?

These units are made for the application...no hacking ECM's or driveline electronics:

Ahhh...can now see the reason to ask. We LOVE the Allison in our Workhorse chassis RV.
There is no easy swap for the Ford V10 to an Allison to my knowledge.
Major engineering if done.
Best luck

I believe some late model medium duty trucks from International/Navistar had a 7.3L/Allison 5 speed set...bullet proof stuff. But, I have no idea about the 6speed's availability with the 7.3L.
Best luck
