My son tells me he accidentally hooked up the battery backwards , could this trip the fuel pump switch as the engine starts with fuel starter but won't keep running or what else should I look for?

I'd check the ECU to be sure it's working properly. There are a number of inputs that the ECU 'reads' to keep the fuel pump on to provide gas to the injectors. I don't understand "engine starts with fuel starter but won't keep running." Do you mean the engine starts but then when you release the starter, it stops?

I don't know what chassis you have, but if it's a fuel injection system, it might need a tech to find any issues. Did your son try to start the engine with the battery hooked up wrong?

He means as long as you spray starting fluid into the intake the engine will run. When you quit spraying the starter fluid, it dies.
