I've never flushed mine ('99 chassis), but I am more interested in how difficult the bleeder screws were to loosen.

I flushed the brake system on our 2001 Adventurer on the F53 chassis a couple months ago. I was installing A Roadmaster 9000 braking system and since I had to tap into the hydraulic system anyway I thought it would be a good time to flush it.

All of the bleeder screws came loose easily. I ran about 4 quarts of fluid through the system to purge any air and to be sure the fluid comming out of each calipar was clear.

I don't think the system takes more than a couple quarts, but the idea of flushing it is to get out any moisture. If the fluid has any color to it you're still pumping out some of the old that has moisture in it.

I used DOT 4 fluid which is what came in the system. Ford says you can use DOT 5 silicone fluid but it's more expensive and should still be changed at the same intervals.

I just had my 01 Itasca system purged and cleaned. What was in the system looked like molasses from moisture it had picked up. It was clear, but thick and viscous. There was no damage done, but the truck service place where I had it done, said there would have been trouble had it been left go any longer. They recommend purge, flush and change every 2-3 years. This was an independent truck service company. Cost $110.00, good investment, as the brakes must work every time.

After taking delivery of our coach in 2000 I checked all the fluid levels before leaving the dealership. Upon checking the brake fluid level and finding the clear gel like substance in the reservoir I was concerned and brought it to the attention of Ford service tech. He informed me it was normal as it was a substance used during the manufacture of the master cylinder and would no way affect the braking system. It's still clean, clear and feels the same.
