I'm looking for a code reader. I hope to be able to read codes and clear (erase) them as needed. We have a 2006 31' Class A Itasca Sunrise, with the V-10 Ford Chassis.

I'm a DIY'r and like to have a handle on things before I go running for service. Hate to go to the "Stealership" to have codes read !

Any recommendations or "lessons learned" would be very much appreciated.

I like my autotap, tells me whats wrong and can reset the service engine light.

I ordered the unit and the Ford upgrade. $300. Plugs into a laptop, does not work with vista 64, but will work with vista 32 and xp.

I have the Scangauge II. Tells me trans temp, water temp and a bunch of other neat stuff.
It has a code reader and you can re-set the codes.

About $160 direct from Scangauge.

I also use a Scanguage II, it gives you a code reader and a full set of digital guages and a trip computer.

My new issue of " Family Handyman" just came yesterday and had an article on code readers and had a comparison of four different readers and prices.

Scangage II.
Code reader/resetter, a bunch of gauges, trip computers, plus you can program many gauges that are not built into the scangauge as it comes from the factory. The only thing I don't like is that you can only see 4 gauges at a time.

Wow, overwhelming response pointing to ScanGauge II.

I spoke with Joey Snyder @ Linear-Logic who makes the ScanGauge II, after he responded to my email asking about the product. He was very helpful and left me with a good impression about their product and customer support.

I like the "as delivered" features and the potential of additonal gauge features. I'll wrap-up my research in a couple of days and order my final choice.

I have a "check engine" light displayed and ready to be diagnosed. I'll post results.

Thanks to all the responders.

Matco tools makes a new code reader that is hand held, resets engine light, clears codes and gives you a readout of what the code is. The cost is 79.95 and works on all OBDII vehicles. It's not a piece of junk.

Their customer support is good. My original Scanguage II didn't have the option of adding additional guages, but when that option became available, it was free to all who bought in the last year and $25 for older models. I had it back in less than a week.

Gotta cast another vote for Scanguage II. Great customer service and does everything I need... mine has paid for itself several times over. And also just fun to use. Of course the DW gets tired of hearing our "current mileage" numbers. I ran the original cable inside the dash, and mounted mine on the MH dash. Then I ordered a second cable so I can move the Scanguage to our other vehicles as needed.

Just ordered a ScanGauge II from ScanTool.com for $159.95. An extra cable was an additional $1.00, what a deal. Total $160.95, Free Shipping and No Tax. ScanTool.com has an Arizona address.

I'll post my take on the unit, ASAP. I've got a check engine light on that I'm anxious to get resolved. Also, I can't wait to test and evaluate the additional functions this unit can perform.

Thanks again for all your input.

I use both the autoTap and scangaugeII both of which are great units... the scangaugeII is a little better choice I feel as it does not require a laptop to use.....
