It might be-

On many vehicles, the torque converter lockout function is disabled until the engine comes up to operating temperature.

This usually goes unnoticed as the engine temperature quickly passes through the "enable temperature".

the coolant thermostat sticking open might cause this.

It won't do MACH 2, but I can get a sandwich and take a pee.

The TC clutch should not activate until about 42mph. If your first 10 miles is city driving and around 40-45 mph then it would be normal for the converter kicking in and out.

A TC clutch is not noticeable by most as it goes in and out of engagement. Are you sure it is not going in and out of OD?

Bill,

the OP mentioned it was the OD. I'm not real familiar with Ford, but I know some manufactures have labeled the TCC as OD, thats why I mentioned it.

They may have put the wrong filter in it.

my vote is for the thermostat had it happen in a car once shifting erratic.

I never noticed it before the last service, I did the service myself and it was not the wrong filter, due to me buying the wrong one and it not fitting when I did the service :-(

Note that some Ford dealers have installed the wrong filter as their parts department issued out the wrong one and a lot of auto parts stores will sell the wrong filter. You have to ask for a filter for a 4X4 to get the right one.

Some have also had to install a clip to hold the filter up and if the filter falls you will get this problem also.
