That's my next check, Bill.
I forgot to mark, or otherwise note, where is was set in the beginning. I'll make note of that this time.

As a last resort to see if it is a cable problem:
Block the wheels unhook the cable and turn the linkage by hand on the trans.
Now will it go into park??

trans. cable
I have a 96 F53 same problem. Found cable sleeve broken, caused by exhaust man. heat. sleeve is plastic. My repair was to slice a piece of 3/8 poly tube, the type used water supply for fridge, end to end,2 ft. long.slid over broken cable sleeve Did same with a piece of 1/2 pex tube. Be sure selector on trans.is in park.(all the way aft) with shift lever in park.Don't climb under without blocking wheels. I then put a small hose clamp on each end, taped end to end, wraped well with foil backed rock wool matt.Works fine 2yrs.

Thanks for the tip, Gerry
I'm not sure I can accurately visualize your fix, but will try to determine if my problem is the same. I'll wait for warmer weather before I attempt any further diagnosis/fix. lou

Does adjusting the steering wheel tilt affect it - mine does! Far up, all's well. Down, difficulty shifting/indicator out of place or slow...
