Question E40d overdrive button not working

1998 Winnie Adventurer 460 V8. E40D tranny shifts fine. Goes into overdrive no problem. But the light on the shift lever does not come on and there is no control with the button.

Many of those gear shifters suffered from chaffed wires where they come out of the shifter shaft under the column trim. It may be the button but most likely the chaffed wiring.

my 1994 eod4 overdrive push button is mounted in the end of the shifter, it has a light to say when o/d is turn off. If this is the same as your's a new button with light can be found on Ebay. It's made by Dorman and can be found at some Auto parts stores. Many Ford trucks used the same setup.

Had mine replaced this year, I believe you have to replace the light and button, as they are sold as one. Forgot the price. The light also serves as sort of check engine light for the transmission. If it's flashing there is an issue with the transmission. So if the light does not work you could end up messing up the transmission because you do not know there is a problem. At least that was what I was told.
