Have a 1997 National 35' with ford 460. The brake is adjusted as far as possible but does not hold. I have detailed instructions on how to rebuild but they call for a lot of tools not available to me. Does anyone know of a source to obtain a rebuilt unit? This the drum betweed transmission and drive train.

Thanks for any help.

You could always get a used one from a salvage yard.
I would think you could also get a rebuilt one from a Ford dealer.

It doesn't really require special tools if you're a gear head. I've had mine apart and re-sealed it. Sadly, you need to do a complete disassembly to change the shoes.
Here's a link to a company that sells parts and reman ZF brake assemblies.

Thanks Bill and Richard,

A rebuilt unit is around $700. WOW. Think I will take a second look at doing it myself. Have no leaks or bearing noise, just need to replace the pads.

LOL. That rebuilt price wouldn't look so bad after getting a quote from Ford to replace that unit. Around $1100 several years ago.

Before you really get your knickers in a twist, check the adjuster on the parking brake cable. On one of my Ford cars a few years back, I had the same problem. A few minutes with Liquid Wrench spray and a couple of wrenches adjusting the cable solved it.

Just my six-penn'orth.

Here's another source for rebuilt ZF parking brakes.

The website shows up to 2005. Does anyone know what is different after that? I looked all over my 2006 and it looks just like my old 97 brake unit does.

Don't forget to order the seals. You'll most likely distroy them gettting the brake assebmle apart.
