I found this article quite interesting & it was a wake-up call for me.

In short, the article states that, on the Ford F53 V10 chassis, techs don't allow enough time for the newly installed oil to drain back, after engine start up, from the heads. This causes a false (low) dipstick reading resulting in an overfilling with oil.

I dug up my coach's owner's manual & found it requires 6 quarts of oil with a filter change. My past 2 preventative maintenance service records showed I was charged for 6.5 quarts & 7 quarts, respectively.

For future maintenance, I will be sure to show the shop my owner's manual specifications & be sure that I get only what Ford recommends - not a drop more!

Would a half quart extra really hurt anything?

I think some of the confusion comes from the fact that this engine is also used to power stationary generators and pumps. Some of the stationary units use 6.0 qts, some use 6.7 qts, and still others use 7.0 qts of oil. As far as I am aware ALL the engines used in trucks and motorhomes use 6.0 qts of oil.

Just one more valid reason why I will always continue to change my own oil. That way I know its done right.

I was an OIL FREAK!!!!? NOBODY could touch my engines, exc. under Warranty!!!
But now I'm too old for this stuff... I go here to an Automotive shop, that I learned to trust over the years... he gets my RV business.
Whatever I can do (exc. adding pix!!?), I do it myself.
Wish, I could still do more
