F53 Dash Air

It's bought a Thor ACE 29.2 on the F53 chassis. Have had it back to the dealer three times for service of chassis AC. Intermittently blows warm air when on max cool. They have been unable to resolve. They have had it serviced by an AC "expert" as well as a Ford truck service center.

Is anyone else having this problem and, if so, any suggestions? Plan on being in the southwest in two months and certainly want the cab air to work.

Welcome to IRV 2. Hopefully someone will be able to get you cooling again.

Howdy and welcome to the forum. I recall seeing a lot of complaints about various dash a/cs. With our Bounder, there are two choices...hot or cold. No temperature gradient AT ALL. The temp selector has to be all the way to the coldest setting for the a/c to work; anything less and it feels like the heat is on. We have not bothered to take it back to the dealer because we know they will give the "works as designed" answer, so we'll ask the ford truck dealer to have a look when we get it inspected next month.

I hope you can find a resolution to your problem.

Wow - I don't have this issue at all. The dash air is so cold, we find ourselves actually turning it down. I had read previously about many others complaining that it didn't blow cold (or get cold enough), so that was definitely on my list to double check prior to purchase.

Sorry to hear you're having this issue. Have you tried calling Thor customer service directly on this?

Thanks for your encouragement. I have not yet spoken to the folks at Thor. Plan on doing so next. These intermittent problems are always the worst. Works some of the time and then it doesn't.

As you already know, the dealer's response is "It's not our problem. It's a Ford problem." My response is that I didn't buy a chassis and a coach; I bought a complete unit from them. Doesn't seem to matter.

Unfortunately, as far as warranty issues go, they are correct. Anything that was on the stripped chassis that came out of the Ford factory is warrantied by Ford. Everything that Thor added is warrantied by them. Fwiw, our 29.1 has blown reliable cold air for a year.

You did not say what year you bough but anyway the A/C system most of the time is not 100% Ford or the after market maker. It is about 50-50.
The compressor and the condenser may be Ford but the evaporator, blower and controls are the after market maker.

You do not happen to know who made the after market part do you? They are the ones that help you out most of the time. Evens is one of the makers of the other parts but there are others. You should have a list of who made what part of the RV that came with it when you bought it.

Your problem sounds sort of like the one we had. First we had a intermittent case of warm and cold. Checked several times at both the coach builder and Ford with the same answer from each of no problem found. 3 months out of coach warranty the dash air blew warm only. So first stop was the Ford dealer hoping it was a Ford problem and that part of the warranty was still in force. Ford found this time the wiring just beyond where the coach builder had tapped into the Ford system was routed over a sharp end of coach tubing and had rubbed through and short out. Of course it was in the coach wiring so I had to foot the bill ($287) most of that labor tracking it down. Ford wrote their finding up on the bill along with copies of the other times it had been in and I send the bill to the coach builder. I never did get a check.

On ours is an Evans Tempcon. Its adequate but thats all I can say. Takes a long time to cool and it never gets really cold at the outlets.

If everyone would only go to the top of the page & click on USER CP & go down the left side & click on SIGNATURE. Then enter the year & model & Manufacture of the chassis and body. That information would always be on the end of your message and would help everyone trying to help trouble shoot the questions or help understand comments.

On my Challenger, the blend box vacuum motor became detacted from the mounting. Something to check. JM2¢...

Dwight,

Thanks for the reminder to turn "signature" on. Hope this works.

This is a bit of a challenge for an old "analog man".

It sounds like it might be freezing up. It is easy to check and see if that is the problem. The next time it stops cooling turn off the compressor but leave the fan on high. Wait about five minutes and turn on the compressor again. If it starts cooling each time, it is probably the coils freeing up.
