Thanks for the replies, sounds like Ford can make a quiet differential if I persist, which I will do this fall. First time they had the MH almost a month, so will definitely wait until I will have it parked for a while.
Thanks again for everyones response,

Hi, I have an 07 Damon Daybreak on a f53 chassis. Rear end made noise from new. Has been rebuilt 3 times. Still making a whine . Similar story to yours, makes different noises under different loads.Has 42,000 kms.on it and the warranty expires in May of 2012. Good job I bought the extended warranty. It is presently in the Ford garage at Kamloops BC. I am hoping that this time they install a complete new "pumpkin" . I am not a mechanic but thats what they call the carrier or whole diff.If I were you I would persevere and take yours back before tha warranty expires. I am told it is aabout a $8000.00 job to do the whole pupkin. Paul

They suggested driving it several thousand miles and the noise might further reduce. It has not and now I am asking if others have this issue and is some noise normal. Noise is worse when pulling power on drive line at speeds between 55 and 70. If I let up on the gas, the noise goes away and seems to be the differential.
While Ford's effort greatly reduced the noise, the unit is in it's last year of warranty and I am trying to decide whether to take it back to Ford again or just live with the noise, as I have read one poster say - it is a truck, so is some level of noise normal?
I can hear the whine when under load above all other noise - wind, road, engine, but it is not exceedingly loud just annoying.
Thanks for your feedback.

Unreliable, probably NOT. (Typical USA engineering/management....) Bet if it was a Honda or Toyota.....

What do you mean you insulated yours? What did you do to quite it down?

I put insulation in every floor cabinet in the rear end, suspended pink fiber glass insulation on the underneath floor above the diff., plugged every hole on the floors & walls and installed padding & carpeting throughout (biggest help).

Diff and drive line should NOT make any noise. Either has bad bearings or not set up properly. Any one that tries to tell you some noise is normal is full of beans. Get on your dealers case and don't quit.

Yeah, I think we're all aware of that but it's a very common complaint, and my motor home is twenty years old so the dealer is out of the picture... They obviously left Dana set up this way, so someone screwed up on the line when they were assembled.

Given the extended length of the driveshaft, has anybody bothered replacing the driveshaft carrier bearing?

Would the carrier bearing change noise level and almost go away when not pulling power from the drive line? Originally the dealer accepted it was the rear end and they rebuilt it and reduced the noise, just did not eliminate it. They asked me to put a few miles on it and see if it got better. Now I have 13K miles on it and the noise is not any better, so plan on returning this month and have them re-check the noise and try again.
Thanks for everyones comments.

Simple answer is yes it can. The basic problem with noises is that one person's whine is another persons squeal, especially over the internet. It is not a common problem when new, but I would have to say it is probably as common as a differential whine/squeal when it is new also. Just another area to look at.

New Diff
Hi
Ours had similar noises coming fromthe diff.
When I played around with the accelerator I coould almost make a tune.
Thats my English humor coming out !
You are right, it is annoying especially on long trips. When we leave Canada to go down South we do 3 eight hour days driving before we get to warm climes.
I have just reviewed my service receipts from Ford and see that the diff was stripped down 3 times and rebuilt.Seeing that we were in our final months of warranty I urged the dealership that I wanted a new diif. or as they call it a new pumpkin.
Anyway, Ford did approve a new "pumpkin "to be installed.
Picked up the motorhome and it is great to hear no noises other than what I might call a " normal ". No changes in noise when we let up on the gas . One of the noises we had sounded more like a grinding than a whine. We have a little Ford Focus car and there is a bit of whine from that which I would say is normal.
Anyway, I would suggest that you continue on and try to get a new diff. installed. The service adviser showed me the bill to Ford for the work done . Over $4500.00 !. Ford have more money than me and I am glad they approved the new diff.

If the the diff. is making noise when first rebuilt or fresh from the factory it is NOT going to quiet down with driving. The noise comes from not being set up right. I also don't think the carrier bearings (there are two) would make the same sound as the differential "whine".
I find it hard to believe Dana let so many units out the door not being set up right but they obviously did....

It is back in the Ford Truck Shop, took 3 days for them to test drive and confirm the noise. They pulled the rear end apart and reported they have ordered new ring and pinon and bearings, same parts as replaced when I first purchased the motorhome.
Hopefully will be back together by the end of next week and will report their success/failure. Could not get them to replace the "pumpkin" as recommended on forum.
Wish them success as I do not want to have to do this a third time.

had a 99 pace arrow, the rear in that made more noise than the cummins in our current DP. As I can't hear it from the drivers seat, it is not a problem.
