The "pumpkin" refers to a drop out center differential, the Dana is the Salisbary type and uses a rear cover to access the diff gears. The Ford 9" rear axle is an example of a drop out center section and the Chevy 10 and 12 bolts (refers to the number of bolt that holds the cover on) are Salisbury style.
Salisbury is the company that developed that type axle... Too much information ?

I just bought a `04 Sea Breeze with 15K on the F53 chassis and in the few miles I have driven it, there is no drive line noise. I hear everything when driving all my vehicles and can't stand any unexplained noise. Don't let anyone tell you it is normal or will fix itself. At least get it on paper that the noise is there before the warranty runs out.

Unreliable, probably NOT. (Typical USA engineering/management....) Bet if it was a Honda or Toyota.....

LOL but you are correct....

Dealership finally received the parts today and guess what - wrong gear. So re-ordered parts and another week before I know if they are succesful this time or not.
Planning on heading South first week in November, so they are really cutting this close, just hope parts are right this time and they are succesful at rebuilding the rear end this time.

Have an 06 F53 with 22.5 tires. I believe it is a 22K chassis. It has made noise that changes with accelerating and decelerating since new and now has 26k miles. Have not noticed any change in noise levels between New and Now. Believe the noise to be cause by ring and pinion improper setup. Just my 2 cents.

Sound like the typical differential noise...

Dealership put the differential back together and still has noise, maybe a little better. They are disassembling it again and trying to reset the gear alignment to see if they can improve. Another two day delay, so will know by Thursday or Friday if they are succesful.
Not generating a lot of confidence on my part, but I can still hope for the best.

Our '05 Scottsdale is on an '04 F53. There is a differential noise when decelerating and a very annoying pitch at a constant 90 kph (55 to 56 mph). About 2 clicks below 90 or 3 to 4 clicks above and it is gone. Of course it isn't going to get better, but so far at least, it hasn't gotten any worse. I'm the second owner and it has 15524 miles on it.

No noise I would attribute to the rear end.
Course, I probably wouldn't hear it over my wife's jabbering in my ear and changing the tunes on the stereo every 15 seconds LOL.
On a serious side, I wouldn't hesitate to get it looked at while still under warranty!

2007 with 22,000 miles and I have a whine while under load that disapears when I let off the accelerator. Done it since new. My 97 did it and my dads 03 does it.
