What level of drive line noise, specifically differential noise is normal? I have a 2007 Winnebago on a 2006 F53 22,000 # chassis. Bought new in January 2009. Originally had even more noise, Ford rebuilt the differential in February 2009 and reduced the noise significantly. They suggested driving it several thousand miles and the noise might further reduce. It has not and now I am asking if others have this issue and is some noise normal. Noise is worse when pulling power on drive line at speeds between 55 and 70. If I let up on the gas, the noise goes away and seems to be the differential.
While Ford's effort greatly reduced the noise, the unit is in it's last year of warranty and I am trying to decide whether to take it back to Ford again or just live with the noise, as I have read one poster say - it is a truck, so is some level of noise normal?
I can hear the whine when under load above all other noise - wind, road, engine, but it is not exceedingly loud just annoying.
Thanks for your feedback.

Yoda,
I have a 2007 Ford f53 superduty chasis 22,000#
That's way too much noise for me.
Rear ends are famous for that "under load" noise so Ford, hopefully can put on "roller equipment?" and check complete drivetrain.
This may be your last chance at n/c.

Steve

Ford needs to dismantle the diff, and realign the pinion-to-ring gear contact. Its certainly not going to get any better by itself, and misalignment will cause premature wear and failure. If the wear on the ring gear is too much, it should be replaced.
Yes, it is a truck, but that's no reason it should make any more noise than a car diff.
on edit - if the noise goes away when decelerating, it is certainly caused by the differential.

A lot of reads, but very few comments. How many Ford F53 Drivers out there experience differential noise? Does your differential make any audible noise while you are going down the highway?
My experience is this one motorhome, that is why I am asking this forum's members their experience on their F53's.
Thanks for your anticipated response.

Our 92' HR on a 91' chassis has made noise since we've owned it.

Our F53, when we had it, 2002-2009, made absolutely no drive line noise. When I was younger and had a Ford that I was at the junkyard seemingly ever other week replacing rear-ends and transmissions I would occasionally get a differential that would howl when accelerating and quiet down when coasting. Being the tinkerer in those days I took the differential apart and with the advise of a Ford tech inserted washers to eliminate the play in the shaft of the differential. No more noise....
Bottom line, they should be able to ELIMINATE any and all noise in your drive train. I wouldn't settle for anything less....

I had a 97 f-53 that Ford tried twice to repair for whine
1st time replaced all bearings and reset lash
2nd time put in new ring and pinion as well as all new bearings again
3rd time they replaced the complete rear end housing and this fixed it
FWIW

I have put 60,000 miles on my 1999 F-53 and had minimal noise which is normal. The skill of the mechanic setting up the ring gear and pinion is the whole solution to the noise problem Unfortunately it is very labor intensive. If the clearance is set wrong the noise will continue to be excessive. With the high labor costs it is a less risk to the mechanic to replace the complete gear assembley Even then there is a possibility of excessive gear noise if the new assembly was set wrong .

Bought my used unit already had diff. noise at 52k miles Oct 09. At 64k miles of course still there, about the same noise level. If still under warranty insist they silence it. Of Ford's (actually Dana's 135) diff. many are noisy. I just sound insulated mine. TOO darn much $$$ to get just rid of noise.
Unreliable, probably NOT. (Typical USA engineering/management....) Bet if it was a Honda or Toyota.....

I have no noise but if the chassis is an 07 you should be covered 5/60 on power train
Effective July 14, the powertrain limited warranty for 2007 Ford and Mercury vehicles will be five years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. That’s an additional two years or 24,000 miles of coverage for such components as the engine, transmission and rear axle beyond each vehicle’s three-year or 36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty.
