John, I've heard where folks with models earlier than 2000 have had in-tank fuel pump failures. Haven't heard of any in the later model coaches. What year is yours??

I have a 2003 Ford F 53 Super Duty MH 22,000 lb chassis and my fuel pump went this past summer. One morning just would not pump. The pump was abouy $400 and about 4 hours to empty and drop the tank and replace the pump. Been working fine ever since.

Ford changed from a diaphram style pump to a turbine style pump in about 2000. The earlier style had a much higher failure rate than the newer ones.
Like anything mechanical some will fail. The hardest thing on them is running less than 1/4 tank of fuel in hot weather. The fuel keeps the pump cool.
We have over 60,000 miles on our 01 Adventurer without any problems.

I also heard about the 1/4 tank being bad on fuel pump. that is why I never let it get below 1/2 tank. Don't want to get stuck on my m/h when using the genset at tailgate parties and games.. best being safe then sorry. that is why it stays full always.

We had a fuel pump failure on our 2006 chassis. I never go below 1/4 tank. Fortunately by removing a bolted in crossmember they shop was able to replace it in about 15 minutes without dropping the 80 gal.full tank.
This is our first M/H and we're happy with the F53 so far, PLENTY of power and the new Torqueshift Transmission does just about all the Allison does, That torqueshift sees the road better than I when descending a grade with a sharp curve and downshifting. I've been a GM man all my life, caught a lot of grief for getting a Ford because that was the only chassis the floorplan we liked was on at the time of purchase. But after lurking on the WH forum I'm glad I got an F53. I had already developed a respect for the precursor to the chassis from past employment involving medium duty trucks. After seeing how WH is I have absolutely no regrets.

By the way, Ford bent over backwards to take care of the fuel pump despite an errant tow truck driver that took us to the wrong shop. Buddy's Automotive in Mobile Al is a very excellent shop.

gene2: Good post, a lot of us feel the same way you do about Ford. I am an ex-GM, 3 time owner. I am very happy with my Ford.
