F53 Transmission fluid capacity

Does anyone know how much fluid is needed to change the fluid on an 07 five speed?

jmckinley, I did some research and I believe that the 5R110W will take 17.5 quarts BUT I would call your Ford dealer to make absolutely sure.

I did notice a number of owners installing Mag-Hitek oil pans to increase the capacity by 8 additional quarts which extends the drain interval. These unit use Mercon V.

NO. The 2007 Torqueshift does NOT use Mercon V. The OEM fill was Mercon SP and has been replaced with Mercon LV and is only currently available from a Ford dealer.

Draining only the pan will drop about 5 to 6 qts. The other 12 are in the torque converter, trans body and cooler lines. Since there is a drain plug on the pan, I find it much easier to drain and refill only the pan every 5000 along with the normal engine oil changes rather than waiting until 50k to change all the fluid. draining the TC is more difficult.

Hi - the attached manual is for our 2006 chassis for our 2007 motorhome. 17.5 quarts of Mercon SP ATF.

Regards,

Andy

Thanks for pointing that out. I could not verify the source but that's what was written.

I like the 5K partial drain scheme. How about the internal and external filters? I found Mercon SP and the filters online at Ryder Fleet Services.

Where do you add the new fluid? Down the dipstick tube?

Ours does not have an external filter, or I cannot find it (anyone know where to look on a 2007 F53? Ford Service manual shows drain and refill the pan only on this trans at 30k. Yes the fluid goes in the dipstick/fill tube.

Just FYI, the Mercon SP is no longer being produced and has been replaced by Mercon LV. What stock there is out there of SP is fine to use in 07 and 08 trans that came with SP. LV can be mixed but do not use SP in a trans factory filled with LV (2009 and newer). When pouring the LV, you will be amazed how thin it is. Its like water.

Mercon SP

Ryder Fleet Service on the Internet has Mercon SP. I ordered it and it came in 2 days for $7.95 shipping for 12 qts. $4 something a quart. The also have the FT 145 external filter. Look around near the bottom of the radiator on the passenger side for the filter housing.

Yeah that's where I figured it would be. I followed the cooling lines fromt he trans to the cooler and radiator but cannot find any filter.

Could you post a pic?

Anyway, wonder why its on some but not on others? Is it 24K and above chassis? 2008+?

The Mercon LV was about $42 a case with tax at my local dealer.
