don't see a lot of difference in terms of wear for most types of engines
Agree - The best oil in the world is the one you use at the manufactures suggested scheduled interval. ( I use El-cheapo Walmart 5w30 that meets manufacture specs.

I believe it had something to do with the oil filter allowing more particles thru when new.
Sounds correct.. Filters get better at trapping stuff the more they are plugged up.. All the way up until nothing can flow thru the filter.

Everyone has an opinion on this subject, which is fine. If you want good information, take a used oil sample and send it to a lab.
That will tell what you can do with your oil in your MH. I use Polaris Labs in Indy. I currently have a F150 5.0, an Escape 3.0 and an Expedition 5.4. All of them are doing fine on 10,000 drain intervals. I changed my V10 at 1100 miles. The next one will be at 5000, then out to 7500 if the 5k looks good.

My 07 Fleetwood Ford oil cap states 5-20 oil. I do use 5-30 because around here in the summer, which is when I use the most, it is usually 100 degrees all summer.

The first number is most important I think because when the motor is cold on start up that is the most critical wear time. Ford said it needs 5 so that is what it gets to lube those close tolerances early in the morning.

Did Bob the oil guys article discuss filling the oil filter before installing? With an emty filter the engine doesn't get oil until the filter fills up

I fill filters if they can be installed full without oil running down my arm. If the filter is horizontal, it goes on empty with a fingertip full of clean oil on the gasket.
If you use oil that meets the Ford specs, keep it full, and change it at reasonable intervals the V10 will out-live the rest of the coach.
OTOH, if MobAmRoyalMagenta makes you feel good, do it. It's your MH.

Believe it or not there is one guy on BITOG that mixes different brands and grades to come up with something like a 12W-23 grade. Or something like that.
Like a lot of forums, 80 percent of BITOG is opinion without any supporting information. 20 percent is well thought out and worth reading. Proceed with caution.

You can hold the gas pedal to the floor "Clear flood mode" which shuts off the fuel injectors while cranking to fill the filter without the engine starting. Since the filter on the V10 is straight up, I just pre-fill the filter before installing.

Oh well,

Many years ago Yellow Cab in New York City did a study. As can be imagined, their cars drive a whole lot of miles in rather harsh conditions. Bottom line - frequency of change was more important than the type of oil used. The right viscosity was a given but they found that as long as the oil was changed every 6000 miles then oil related problems never occurred. Longer than 6000 and you had issues. Shorter intervals you just wasted money. This study was done in the early 1990s and only a few full synthetic oils were available. (Consumer Reports:Truth Motor Oils- July 1996). You may or may not know that Mobil 1 has been around for a long, long time, being first developed for racing engines in the early 70's. Since reading this study I've used Mobil 1 exclusively, and change every 5000 miles. It's just easier for me to remember and manage then every 7500. I'm now using Mobil 1 Extended Mileage 15000 in all my cars and trucks except for my F250 Diesel where I use the Ford synthetic and filter. When I put Mobil 1 in my E-450 SD RV (Thor Quantum RS26) I saw a slight but measurable increase in fuel economy, a little over 1 MPG. On my last trip to Lake Ontario, 1000 miles round trip, we averaged 8.9 MPG.

I've seen this discussed over and over. I just wonder what's wrong with using exactly what Ford says to use? It doesn't cost that much and it's available at Wal-Mart so it's easy enough to find. Seems like Ford would be the one who's done all the testing. I just don't understand why folks want to second guess the people who make the engine.

Some people like to "meet manufacturer specifications" and other's like to "exceed manufacturer's specifications". Nothing wrong with either philosophies.
I've used Amsoil for many years and will not use any other brand. Other'a have there own preferences.
I, for one, have seen an improvement in gas mileage on certain vehicles with Amsoil, longer change intervals and never had an oil related issue with any vehicle.

The independent studies I have read state that Bosch, Napa Gold, and Wix have the best construction and filtration. I use Wix.
