F53 Wiring Diagrams and more...thx Google

9Need to troubleshoot my brake (well entire rear lighting group) as they all have stopped working...ok, about 7-months ago). Since my owners manual for the F53 (1997) doesn't show anything at all for the chassis lighting wiring, decided to search our nemisis/friend Google. Found. Treasure trove of wiring goodness.

Depending on the Ford chassis (E-series or F-53) and model year, there are two or three Ford connectors in the rear that supply all the signals for the rear coach lights and trailer hitch connector. Ford provides to the "coach builder" a 12-inch pigtail for each of those connectors. The coach builder butt-splices his wires onto those pigtails and runs the wires to the lights and hitch connector. Sometimes he folds back any unused wires onto the pigtail connector and tapes them up.

You will find the connectors on an E-series (van = Class C) chassis inside the left chassis rail, about three to eight feet from the end of the coach. For a Class A built on the F-53 chassis, the (two) connectors are usually in roughly the same place.

In my opinion, it is better to use what Ford and the coach manufacturer provide than to run new wires.

eBay has Ford service and wiring manuals available for some model years in paper and DVD form. Changes from year to year may be small, but it's best to get a manual for your model year.

Here's the Tail and Trailer Lights Pigtail Drawing for our coach. Two connectors are shown: C405 and C406. The information is typical for F-53s made from around 2000 on.

Mark,
Location thanks for those details! Haven't gotten to finishing the tracing, old & creaky....so your added help gives me an excuse for 'she who must be obeyed'...

Actually you made the fix easier...by a wide margin...
