The problem with recalls they are mandatory on the part of the manufacturer but not of the owner. The track record of recalls is that the manufacturers spend tons on money notifying owners with very few responding.

Somewhere a owner needs to take some responsibility of when buying a new vehicle to ask the dealer about any outstanding Technical Notices.

Likewise I am not a great advocate of special licenses for driving heavier RVs but that doesn't remove the onus of the RV driver to realize you need to be aware of the extra care needed for driving them.

I feel somewhat obligated to reply to this old thread as it such an important subject. It took me a while to figure out that my Tow/Haul was not working and it would not surprise me to know that others with F53s prior to 2016 are having the same issue. The difference is so dramatic that I know feel a bit foolish that is took me so long to convince myself that there was a problem.

My experience was similar to others in that I had to drive over 200 miles to a Ford dealer who would work on a Class A motorhome. It seems most Ford dealers, even commercial Ford truck dealers, will not work on motorhomes. When I finally found a dealer that would do the work and they warned that it my be weeks before they could get to my rig. It ended up that they called me the next day to tell me it was ready for pickup.

If you are in the Pacific Northwest, Northside Ford in Portland seems to the the place to go for Ford service on your Class A F53.

Thanks again to those who figured this out.

I was probably the one most responsible for getting the tow/haul not working issue resolved. I ended up working with the director of the F53/F59 division. I received lots of advice on how to drive before it was resolved. It was addressed by a technical bulletin, not a recall. The problem occurred with 2016 and early 2017 chassis to the best of my knowledge. It took me almost a year and several dealers blowing me off before it was resolved.

The computer wasn't programmed for the transmission tow/haul feature to function and Ford said it was not a problem.
