Does anyone out there knows where the Temp Sensor that controls the Temp gauge is located in a Ford 460 7.5L engine?

This is for a 1988 Catalina, Ford Econoline E350.

My temp gauge suddenly died (it sometimes slightly move, but most of the time is dead) and I went to buy the sensor, the dealer told me it has 3 ( ) temperature sensors around the engine, but only one of them is connected to the gauge. I bought the one he thought was the correct one, but I can't seem to find its location. The only sensor I have found is near the distributor, but it is bigger than the sensor the dealer sold me.

Any ideas here?

Thanks in advance,

BB

The sensor you are after has only one wire going to it and it is a push on wire like the one on the starter solenoid.

Here is a diagram:

Beautiful... I am still impressed by the size of this engine and love seeing pictures and graphs of it.

Coming back to the sensor, I think I did see that sensor [Coolant Temp. Sender] yesterday, but the sensor the dealer sold me was much smaller... they must have sold me the wrong sensor!

Thanks for the help!

BTW, where do you find these graphs? Is it a PDF? Is it online?

No I scanned it out of the 1988 Ford Truck Shop Manual.

Thanks Subford,

I've replaced the temp sensor and it is working fine! And I also replaced the fuel filter per your pics. Thanks a ton, very appreciated!

I will be driving for a few hours this weekend to make sure the engine stuttering / coughing is gone.

Also, I found out I do have the FI engine... not sure if a good or bad thing...

Thanks

BB

not much of a Ford guy, prefer the bowtie, but when you want to talk about an impressive motor, the 460 sure puts on a show! Chevy's 454 is only 6cu.in. smaller but when you look at them sitting in the bay of an rv the 460 looks like a 640 compared to the 454!

FI is good and bad, better engine performance and more reliability, however you need more fuel psi to keep it running like 45+psi on a FI compared to the 5psi needed on a carburetor motor. so when a fuel pump goes out, it goes out... there is no limping it to the next service station or anything, it's just done!
