Ford F53 Po175 ODB code

My 2004 F53 is generating a Po175 ODB code.

After some online searching I came back with the below.

https://www.google.com/amp/repairpal...-and-P0175.amp

Has anyone had this issue before?

Safe to assume no driveability issues?

Ever have a wet air filter? Common issue with '99-'04 F53s. If the filter got wet, good chance the airmeter did too. That can ruin the airmeter. Tough to check if it's good though. You can inspect it, should be nice and clean. First picture attached show a clean sensing element. Second one shows where to look, the blue circle is the airflow sensor, the red is the temperature. (Second picture is a little blurry, first only added because it's more in focus.) There are cleaning methods out there, but cleaning won't fix permanent damage.

A common problem on slightly older (90's or so) Ford's was the fuel pressure regulator. If the diaphragm ruptures, it will no longer function. Fuel pressure can be too high, setting a 172 and/or 175 code. Fuel can also flow from the regulator into the vacuum reference line becoming an 11th injector. That'll make it run rich too. easy to check the regulator, carefully pull the vacuum reference line off and see if there's fuel there. While you're there, you can verify the vacuum reference line is ok. If it's lost that, pressure will be too high at anything but 0 manifold vacuum.

(Google hasn't given up a decent image of the fuel pressure regulator. Service manual picture stinks. If you need one, I'll keep looking.)

P0175 is bank 2 rich - if you also had a P0172 which is bank 1 rich I could see it being a Mass Air Flow Sensor or many of the other causes listed in the link. A thermostat, throttle position sensor, temp sensors, restricted fuel line, etc usually won't cause one bank only to be rich/lean.

Since you only have one bank running rich, you need to concentrate on what can cause one bank to be rich but not the other.

Hi,

No drive ability issues I can discern.

I called my service place and they said it's an o2 sensor.

I am just calling the warranty company as typing this.

I'm with you. Could just be on the threshold of setting a 172 though. I've seen that a lot. 175 is just what popped first. Like to see the fuel trims in both banks.

Could be an O2 sensor issue too. Nice to see some data from it too.

Do you have the stock exhaust manifolds? Headers can have their own set of issues (leaks, O2 sensor location, extended sensor harness, etc.).

The code definition means that an oxygen sensor (aka O2 sensor) in bank 2 detected a rich condition (too little oxygen in the exhaust). Bank 2 is the side of the engine that doesn't have cylinder #1. Since you don't have a corresponding PO172, which is associated with bank 1, I would suspect airflow and fuel to the injectors are within specifications. Also since you don't have a misfire code or ruff idle it doesn't appear that you lost a cylinder which would dump unused fuel into the exhaust.

Many times the fault is intermittent and a one time occurrence so try clearing the code and wait for a reoccurrence. If the fault is constant then consider swapping the left and right O2 sensors to see if the fault moves to bank 1 which would indicate the sensor is the root cause. If original fault reappears after a swap or replacement of the sensor then you'll need to dig deeper.

When I de-winterized my MH, I have a P2195/P2197 code in the first week or so, then it dissapears. In my case I think it is caused by K&N oil that went on the MAF.

I recall that you had it in the shop for chassis work. What kind of work did the shop do ?

If anything near the engine or exhaust system, they could have damaged something. O2 sensors, wiring....

Hi Twinboat,

They were replacing the bushings on the rear sway bar.

I was at coach doing another job and decided I would clear the code and see what happens.

After clearing it the code light did not come back at all after leaving for it run for 10 minutes and stopping and starting it.

I will drive it on Saturday for a bit and see what happens.

If the error does not reappear should I still get it checked out?

So if the code does not reappear does that mean it was a spurious issue? Would I be OK to just keep driving.

If I go to the dealer it will cost me 100$ in deductible.

The truck place that did the service and fit the steering stabilizer did bit what to deal with the warranty company, this new place I found will, so if I do need to go pay the 100$ it's ok.

If it were me I would wait and see if the code comes back. You may need to drive it 20 - 30 miles to give it enough drive time to see if the problem comes back. If it does not come back then you just saved $100.00 deductible.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking. Also saves me taking time off work.

I will take it for a drive this evening :-)
