Ford model numbers are confusing
I am transitioning from a 1996 F53 17,000 GVWR to a 2008 24,000 GVWR. I just noticed the chassis build sheet (window sticker equivalent) states it as a F550. The VIN number states it as an F53 (1F6NF53Y*********).
Does anyone understand this? If I would need a chassis part is it a F550 or F53?

Congratulations on your new to you coach. You might want to give Fords Customer assistance folks a call at 800 444-3311 and hopefully they can answer your question or at least refer you to someone who can.
Best of luck & safe travels...

The answer is probably yes to both numbers. The F-53 refers to the fact that it is a truck chassis with certain weight springs and a certain length. They are used in a variety of applications: RV's, delivery trucks etc, etc. The F550 probably refers to a more specific application for the F-53 chassis. Probably Ford customer service can give you more specifics. There are also a number of Ford guys here on the forums that can probably also narrow this down some.

Brockx, nice upgrade from your previous MH. Enjoy it, keep us posted on how you like this newer MH. Also keep us updated on your findings on the F53 vs. F550, I have wondered about that too.
Have a nice day.

Brockx, from a Ford Retiree here is my best shot. Pryor to 1999 the motorhome chassis's were made in Mexico along with the F550 and large trucks. In 1999 the assembly of the motorhome chassis's was moved to Detroit Chassis in Detroit as the F-53. I guess it still has some connection to the F-550 chassis cab group.

I have been researching the Ford chassis info and it seems everything references back to F53. https://www.fleet.ford.com/truckbbas...essd_08mhc.pdf these spec sheets are available by GOGGLING the year you are interested in (20** Ford F53 Chassis). I was really surprised at some of the subtle differences of the 24-26K vs 16-22K.
Can't find any thing relevant on F550 that relates to F53 so I guess (as grtharris above) it must just be an internal Ford "thing".
