DEARBORN, Mich., July 6, 2010 – Ford Motor Company’s class-exclusive truck offerings will extend to medium-duty chassis cabs with the arrival of the 6.8-liter V10 gas engine in 2012. With this addition, Ford will be only manufacturer to offer a gas-powered vehicle in Class 1-7, offering a lower-cost option in each segment.

They are going to connect it to the new six-speed TorqShift automatic transmission, don't know when that will make it to the mh chassis.

Now if they would just build a gas pusher chassis like WH did, it would be the icing on the cake.

Oh Well!!!!!

Never did understand why Ford didn't offer the PS diesel in the f53 chassis as an option unless the 4R100 transmission couldn't handle the torque.

Limited supply while they were in litigation over defects with the manufacturer of the PowerStroke engines may have had something to do with it.

When Ford was selling the 7.3 it would have made a great motorhome chassis engine but back then they did not offer the 24k and 26k chassis so did not see the need. Market may have proved them wrong but we will never know.

With the current Scorpion Ford Diesel, while it could go in the F53 chassis, Ford is having some diffeculties with it and its expensive. Between the cost of the engine upgrade (its right at 10k on a pickup) and the cost of a diesel Onan Genset over the Marquis gold (about 6k upcharge) would add about $16k to the cost of the chassis. Similar to the cost of the FRED chassis which has also not done well in the market due to its cost relative to the gas engine chassis. Spend that much extra and folks seriously consider going to a pusher at about $25k up. With the current cost of diesel engines and thier emissions equipment is why Ford is now offering the 6.8 gas in larger commercial trucks. They hold up fine, get within 2mpg of the diesel and cost $15k less in those trucks. Not to mention much lower maintainance costs.

Below 26k GVWR, there is less and less justification for diesels from the financial side. Above that there are really no gas options. I doubt we will see Ford offer the diesel in the F53 would be very hard to market now.

Ditto jcthorne, with all of the add up you are still setting on steel springs. I would like to see the new 6 speed with the V10 with a real air suspension.
I'm going to start checking my inside sources the 6 speed is surely coming soon.

The 6.8L V10 has been around for several years now, when are we going to see the improvements that are going into other engines? Both Ford and Chevy have multi-valve direct injection V-6 engines that are producing over 300HP, and Ford's is claiming 31 MPG in the new Mustang! This new 3.7L V-6 produces 95 more HP than the 4.0L engines in the previous model and get's about 5 MPG better gas mileage. Why hasn't this technology made it's way into the larger truck engines? Given these increases, one would think they could produce a gas truck motor for MH applications that could produce about 500HP and get 10+ MPG! If Ford could pull this off, they would be on the top of the hill!

That's good news for most of us. Now Driver will have to eat his words. When the demise of the 8.1 chebby was announced, he said the V10 "was soon to follow". So much for his anti Ford rhetoric. GRIN

Come on Rich, go easy on Driver, he's an OK guy -- are you back home or on the road?

What I'd like to see is a selectable 6-speed.
Having multi-speeds with only 2 ranges available, like my Edge, seems like only a half-measure. And driving it on a 'shift out of overdrive, press the brakes and hope it downshifts 1 gear' is ridiculous.

My V10 with the Tow/Haul feature is an improvement but, as Monica said to Bill; no cigar.

Richard, Perhaps you missed the Blog I wrote about the 2011 Ford.

Ford F-Series for 2011

I will be attending the 2010 RVIA Exposition this December and again I will report nothing but the News and facts. I do reserve the right to convey to the readership here what is being said by various reliable sources that I have spoken to. The information that was shared with me a year ago would appear to have changed. This Industry is dynamic and what was true a few months ago indeed would seem to have changed.

The fact that Ford has announced stability through 2012 extends the availability of the powertrain and the production of the V10 however I will try to keep my ear to the rail in the event I hear something. I expect that there is interest here if something is going to change and I hope that the readers here will want to be provided whatever insight can be offered about their favorite "Blue Oval".
