There is a difference between Ford and GM Hydrobost but far as I know it is how they sense engine.. GM uses a flow switch (like a sail switch on a furnace only for Liquid instead of air) in the Power steering line.
IF the engine is NOT running, and you press the breaks, an ELECTRIC "Boost" motor is engaged to provide brake boost.
