We bought our 2005 Itasca 29R used and seldom filled the gas tank because we thought a full tank was using gas to haul gas. On the occasions when we did fill it completely to shut off we would have a small gas dribble for a few miles. We called Winnebago and they told us the tank comes installed from Ford. We took it to a local Ford Truck/RV repair place. Bottom line is the said there was a leak around the top of the tank at the sender unit. The had to take the back jacks off and drop the gas tank. They said the bolts for the access of the sender appeared to welded on and the had to drill them out. Total charges was $1000 for fixing the problem. Has anybody heard of such a thing? I know there would have been considerable labor to drop the tank, and I don't blame the dealer for that, but who would weld on an access panel? (Especially on a gas tank!)

Sounds to me like you got screwed. Even if they drilled out rivets, bolts or whatever, should have been no more than a couple hours & a gasket.

Nothing is welded to the tank. It's the jacks that are welded to the frame, and they have to be removed to drop the tank.

That said, I've been able to work on the top of my tank without dropping the tank. It wasn't easy, I reached in from the end of the tank near the axle. The top of the tank is few inches below the floor.

Sounds like it's too late now though.
