Took the motorhome in just a few days before the 3 year Ford powertrain warranty was up. Had some axle and driveline noises that concerned me.

Motorhome's still there, but diagnosis so far is a new trans and rebuild the axle. Not sure what really happened in the trans, but the torque converter was coming apart and sent metal throughout the trans. I could hear the torque converter locking up, odd. Glad I mentioned it. Axle had water in it, probably since new. May have gotten in while sitting outside. I would think it would be protected from that happening. All new bearings, but the ring and pinion are ok. I'll believe that when it's together...

Also getting the water ingestion fix. Batter safe than sorry.

This one is costing Ford a bunch. I just hope trans #2 outlasts trans #1 by a WHOLE lot

Yikes, do they have any answer as to what caused the problems? How many miles did you have on it? Ever did a tranny oil change?

We're at about 26,000 miles. I was just thinking about a fluid change.

I'd really like to know what happened so I can prevent it next time. I don't do much towing at all, can't really explain it right now. Think I'm going to get a scanguage so I can keep a closer eye on trans temps. As it is now I have to get out my scan tool, which is pretty clumsy, I've only done it a few times.

I installed a temp gauge when I got the rig. I have never seen a temp over about 190-200 that I remember. It usually runs arounds 150 and that's pulling a 3000lb toad. Now if you did some severe backing up, that will heat them up real quick.

I can only recall reading about one transmission problem with the 4R100 since I've been reading various forums. I did read a couple of posts some time ago where there were differential problems but none related to water contamination. I know they come with synthetic lubricant, anyway that what my manual states.

Good to hear it will be covered under warranty, let us know the results.

Almost done...

My transmission was rebuilt, Ford wouldn't pay for a new one. I'll see if I can get that in writing since my warranty is up. If it breaks in the next year or two, I MIGHT have some recourse. Haven't really got a straight story on what went wrong. I'll try to get more before I pick it up.

They say the axle problem is damaged wheel bearings from welding on the chassis, they are going to show me the bad bearing. The shop supervisor says you can see where one of the rollers was essentially welded to the race. Can't quite picture the current path that would do that, but it's got all new bearings now.

And that is where we are at right now. Rebuilt trans and axle. Drove it today and wasn't satisified with the axle noise that is still there. They are going to have a Dana representative come look at it. If he's not happy, I may get a new axle center section.

Well, picked it up today. Dana said that the level of noise I have now is acceptable. I guess I buy that, it is a truck axle.

I'm told there is a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty on the repairs, I need to verify that.

Can't wait to use it again...
