I used to repair a lot of electronic / digital dashboards when I was in business. The majority of problems were caused by cracked solder connections, due to vibration and flexing. These problems presented as intermittent and random issues, and could quite possible cause the dash to light your check engine lights, and even try to sound the electronic beeper, which would make clicking-beeping sounds. These can be repaired, as they're quite costly to replace, Of course, unplugging the dash module would stop this. Just a thought....

It's been several months now since I removed the instrument cluster to inspect it as closely as possible without tearing it apart down to the component level... I found nothing suspicious looking on any solder joints that I could see. I put it back in place and the problem has not returned since. It could be that just unplugging and replugging the connectors resolved a poor connection issue. Impossible to say!
