If you unplug the fuel filter at the exit you could compute how many gallons per minute you get (while you crank the engine). If the pressure is good it means the problem is not gas but something else. It is important to be 100% sure it is not from the fuel supply before investigating more. Could be the fuel cap or the gas vents on top of the fuel tank?

I've got a fuel pressure gauge installed. I know the pressure is dropping, and if I let off the pedal it rebuilds. With it being intermittent I'm not sure doing any measurements at the filter will tell me anything.

Are you saying that the pressure is dropping anormally?

If yes and it rebuilds when you let off the pedal then it could be a blocked vent or gas cap. The rebuilt could be that air has to get inside the tank to replace the fuel but this process is being slowed by a blockage. I am no expert, so it is my guess.

I replaced my fuel pump last summer since it failed. I changed at the same time the two vents ontop of the gas tank and the gas cap.

Two months ago my Mercedes 2010 fuel gauge was suddently at zero after being 10 minutes on the road. I ordered a new gas cap on rockauto and it fixed the problem. Problem did not come back. It means the air pressure can have consequences.

It happens even with the gas cap removed. Older F53's don't have a tank vent (other than the breather line) unless I'm mistaken.

On my 1999 I had two vents on top of the tank. See rockauto for my year. They are both connected to a vent line.

I think my Ford Freestar 2006 would give me power problems if I forgot to screw the gas cap.
