The point was to deaden the roar coming from the engine when the big V-10 spools up for grades, etc. It was so loud the DW and I couldn’t maintain a conversation.
The manufacturer (Hush Mat), advised to pull up all the carpet on the floor around the hump and on the firewall, apply the hush mat and then reinstall the carpet over top. Easier said than done. The carpet, being of the best quality available (sarcasm) was glued down in places and after some effort I realized that to pull it all up was to destroy it. I settled for a thorough covering of the engine hump and related areas inside the engine compartment, literally everywhere I could reach.
As I worked, sometimes around blind corners by feel, I stuck the camera in the engine bay and took digital pictures which I would then examine looking for gaps. I got most of the gaps but it’s not pretty…. not bad, just not perfect.
The material, not thick, is surprisingly heavy and so the removable top of the engine hump is noticeably heavier to handle now.
On idle the engine is just as loud as it ever was it seems to me. However, when I drove it back to the storage garage, I notice that under acceleration it is noticeably quieter.
I won’t know for sure if this was worth the money and time until we take a grade or two next spring.
If I ever change out the flooring on the front half of the coach I will surely cover the floor with Hush Mat or a similar material before putting the new flooring down.
I took lots of pictures, too bad I can’t figure out how to include them on these posts.

Get one with the engine in the back, no noise issues then. Just kidding hope it works out for you, had a Winnebago with a 460 so I know where you're coming from. I'm on my second DP and like them a lot better, power, handling, and ride. Jim

Usually the "noise" is mainly generated by the air intake. I'm not familiar with the V10 but I would think that is your main source of engine noise. My older Ford Chassis was missing an extension piece from the air intake. From info I learned on this forum the piece was no longer available thru Ford and generally an arm and leg was involved to buy used. By using some aluminum clothes dryer elbows and an expandable, sturdy aluminum flex hose, I constucted an air intake that was well down in the front and also in a fresh air stream. The reduction of engine noise was amazing, perhaps this can help you also.

Intake roar can be noisy but my noise was more of a mechanical symphony. It doesn't sound like the motor is coming apart, it just gets loud at high RPM.
The intake is solid as far as I can tell and the inlet is well out from under the passenger area. That’s not to say it isn't contributing to the racket however and your comment is worth checking out.
We did the same thing, only we put laminate flooring down rather than carpet. For the dog house we went with an upgrade of carpet. Like yours the carpet that came with the motor home was not a very good quality to say the least.
I attached a couple of photos while the work was being done. This was one of the best upgrades we have done. It's much quieter, my wife and I can hear each other now. And it's much easier to keep clean than carpet.

some times i would see that as a plus

Thank you. Next question, I can click on the first picture you posted and it expands for closer look, but I can't do that with the thumbnail pic below your post?

njs42 did a good job on explaining the picture procedure
I was fairly lucky on installation, I found a ducting adaptor for the top end that mated the aluminum hose to the Ford opening and I just fastened the bottom aluminum elbow with a large release-able tie wrap for bottom location. I had some of the stuff and Lowe's had the rest. My coach is in storage so I can't readily get more pics, I will add another that may be larger for more detail. If your air intake is not round there are many duct adaptors that go from the 4 inch round duct tube to retangles etc..

The noise you hear is probably the fan clutch engaging. It definitely will create a roaring noise. The noise goes away after getting back to level or downhill, right?

Friend of mine had a Workhorse 8.1 that had fan noise so bad it was torture after awhile.
Easy way to tell, if the noise reduces greatly as soon as it shifts back to high gear, good chance it is intake / engine noise. If the noise reduces a little after the upshift, think fan. I felt from OP that it was related to downshift, higher RPM, The fan clutch won't always kick in right away on a downshift, OP will have to listen and relate the scenario.
