Ford front end King pins are famous in trucking . Famous for needing to be really strong to turn the steering wheel .

Hydro-Boost

Noise with engine off and when brake pedal pressed:

This is most likely your "Hydro-Boost" emergency pump running.. Some Hydro-boost systems use an electric pump and others use a pressure accumulator.

The power assist to your "power brakes" is supplied by your power steering pump. When the engine isn't running, there is a sensor that detects power steering pressure. If it doesn't see any, it turns the electric pump on,.

hard steering - A common problem with early model F53s is the power steering supply hose gets a kink in it. Follow the large hose out the bottom of the reservoir, where it makes a sharp turn and goes through the firewall. Thats usually where it gets kinked..

Here is the only thing I can see that somewhat resembles a kink between the resi, pump, cooler, and box. So I think I just need to grease the front. It only has 15k miles on it so it has been sitting a while. Greasing it later today. Thanks for all the help.

Just greased all 9 points under the front end. Noticeably better and now feels like what I'd expect of an older power steering setup. Thank you all.

If you got a noticeable improvement, I would grease the 4 king pin fittings again, is a few hundred miles.

You want to flush out all the old dry grease.

Twinboat recommends hitting it again soon. Yes. I agree. ALSO - look at the u-joints. I bet yours has grease fittings, Hit them with the grease gun while your under there....

I went until I saw fresh red grease squeezing out on all points except the steering box itself. Will check the driveline today.
