Ideas why Tag tires are wear fast

I mean a ton faster than tje other tires. They look like there are 50k of hard miles on them but the other six look perfect. I've put only about 3k if very easy miles on them.

The wear is even so no excessive wear on inner or outer treads.

I've never owned a tag axle vehicle so it's neq to me. Oh, on the Rexhall gas they are pseudo tags w/no pasaive steering or ability to raise or lower them.

Hoping it's an obvious thing as a couple new tires so soon just aren't in the budget. I have no idea about warranty as they were fairly new when i bought my rig used almost 4yrs ago.

The MH is pivoting on the rear tires. That causes the tag tires to drag, if only a bit, on every turn. The sharper the turn, the more they drag.

The tag axle will slide hard on turns. Try to swing as wide as you can when making a turn.

Yep, turn scrubbing of the tag tires. That is why new coaches have lifting tags.

That's interesting, thank you folks. It makes sense. Do i have the idea correct it's because the wheels aren't powered and just free wheeling.

Is this also the reason some report flat spots on their tag wheels?

Definitely learned an important thing here. Going forward I'll buy a couple new tires for front or. drive axle moving the replaced tires to the tag as long as there is still enough tread.

Again THANKS!

Some other considerations:
- Your inflation pressures may need adjustment. A good 4-corner weight and reset might help.
- If your tag dumps when moving in reverse, just a little brake pressure will stop the tires from turning and they will drag (usually on gravel, dirt, etc).

You have something else in play

Some photos and more information would help

You would have to be driving between two roundabouts to see that much drag wear

I agree with lwm above. This wear is abnormal. My tires have 45,000 miles and the tag axle tire tread looks like new. I would consult a chassis shop or alignment specialist.

Your TAG probably lifts when hard cornering and backing up !
The problem with the FORD, the TAG always sits on the ground, turning or backing up.
Maybe the owner should deflate the TAG of a few pounds...

I had a chevy with a tag. The tag axel has much less weight than the main axle. The tires do not scrub that much. Something is wrong. I would suspect the loading on the axel is excessive. It sounds like the tag is overloaded. There should be someway to load and unload the weight on the tag.

I just noticed in your signature you have airbags on the tag. Check the adjustment of the airbags. Not only will you ruin your tires with overloading you are putting way more weight on the wheel bearings than they are rated for. I had to replace the wheel bearings on a Airstream 345 when the tag was overloaded and ruined the bearings.

good suggestions...i keep corner weights & axle weights low. Tire pressures ate checked at least weekly. But you madr me double check and all is ok.

oh, on my rig the tag is a totally passive component. only adjustment i have are the Ride-Rite bags. I soooo wanted a diesel when i found this but i got a good deal even if she's needed TLC. That's part of the fun right?

why, would you pull that the tag IS overloaded. I provided not indications. But yup Ride-Rite's. This rig was beefed up to tow the PO owner's boat, it was a "custom" build according to the original Rexhall sales contract. I sure have no idea exactly what was custom cuz i haven't noticed anything other than it's a gas rig and no passenger door. Sooo, i dunno.

I like the idea the pressure in the tag bags might be off. Is it logical I've been keeping them too high? Without much weight perhaps that might be increasing the effective load on the axle.

And THANKS for mention of bearings. I honestly haven't had time to even look at them.
