I made a tool out of 3/4" square tubing. Drilled a 1/4" hole in one end and put a 1/4" threaded hook thru it, nutted on each side. Just hook the spring, find a convenient fulcrum point and push or pull to lengthen the spring and remove it.

Thanks John, did you replace the seals ?
I have one that is leaking very slightly and was going to rebuild it over the winter months..

I replaced a rear jack seal on my Power Gear jacks this year and replaced 2 springs last year, it was a snap.

The easiest way to handle the springs is remove the entire jack from the frame. Since you are replacing a seal, you need to anyway. Remove the hydralic line then the jack.

On the top center of the jack there is a bolt which holds down a small steel arm which extends out to hold the spring. Then there is another bolt that goes through the arm into the spring. Just back that out until the spring loses tension and can be removed.

I have a Power Gear manual to replace seals if you need it.

I just replaced the whole jack. I might also add that a hole for the hook about 1' from the end is useful for some installations to get a better fulcrum point.

If you have factory jacks, they should be power gear. Power gear jacks are much easier to do than HWH. As the other poster said, the correct way is just to loosen the bolt that holds the metal bar and the spring looses tension and comes right off. I have done dozens and it is a piece of cake.

Hey Scooter Bob, I have a pdf file that explains the steps to rebuild your jack, not really intense project if you take your time. I tried to post it but it is over the 300 mb limit, 309, and this site won't allow me to upload it.
If you send me your e-mail via private message I will send it to you
Happy Trails
Jim
PS it is for Power Gear Jacks, and specifies the kit you need to get to do the rebuild.

Anyone have a good source for seals or can they be picked up at place that does hydrolic repair, I guess they are a standard size ?

First you need to get the model # off your Jacks, then order the corresponding kit. Not sure if the below file is the one you already have, but you need this to proceed and complete your job.

Jack Seal Replacement

If your jacks are older models, this kit will include a new lower rod guide with a zerk fitting to use lithium grease on them. This does make the kit expensive at about $125. The file above also includes the individual part numbers in the kits. I just ordered the kit, but not sure you can order individual parts.

This is where I got mine.

Power Gear Seal Replacement Kit 800129S
