Went into mine today, and I'm not sure the drum brakes are self adjusting.

Repacked the bearings, and adjusted the brakes and holly s____

This thing will stop on a dime, ( big, big dime ).

Well worth the time!

I had to completely rebuild the hydraulic tag brakes on my Mor-Ryde/Dexter tag.

You don't say if you have hydraulic or electric brakes - they did both.

I had to replace everything except the drums and the actuator valve (good thing since it is not available) which ties the tag system to the chassis brakes. I replaced the entire brake assemblies, backing plate and all as the old parts were badly rusted and the wheel cylinders are a cast part of the backing plate (dumb!). All said I spent close to $1000 on the parts, doing all the labor myself, and the extra braking is very much welcomed.

These are hydraulic brakes. Everything was in good working condition, and judging by the lack of rust on the braking surface of the drums, I assume they probably were slightly working when I was hard on the brakes.
All they really needed was to be adjusted !

It can be pretty tricky getting the tag brakes adjusted to provide maximum braking in normal stops without causing them to be so effective that they lock the wheels in a real hard or panic stop. It's very easy to flat spot a tire when that happens.

You'll know the first time a traffic light suddenly changes and you have to make the decision to quickly stop or some jack-leg decides to cross your lane too near an exit ramp.
