Need Carburetor advice 460ci

Hello everyone, i've got a 1978 Ford E350 460ci with the Motorcraft 4350 carb in it. The engine runs but skips here and again and it dies at idle after a while. I tried to take it to a shop for adjustment, and they told me "No way, that carb is un tune able after a while they don't want to waste their time on it". I guess the guy has had 2 motorhomes with this carb on it.

That being said, I am not sure if i want to even mess with it. Does anyone have any experience replacing one of these carbs? I'd like to find one that is a direct swap.(Meaning bolt right up and the openings line up, i understand i will have to mess with the linkages and stuff) The carb with the air cleaner is about a 1/2 inch from the top of the engine compartment so i cannot put an adapter plate on it... Also, what CFM should i get? If i can find one that bolts up, I was thinking around 600cfm but i have no idea if that is enough for a 24 foot RV and a 1600 pound car in tow. The balance between power and fuel efficiency... Ugh.

Any info would greatly be appreciated. We are leaving on our 10,000 mile trip soon and would like to have this fixed for obvious reasons

Thanks!

There may be a Holley replacement , that will bolt right on , and I'm thinking 800>850 cfm for your displacement.
Try searching your area for a speed/performance shop , that advertises Holley carbs. They will have the cross reference to your application.

You might also post your questions over on the 460 site as they know the older carb 460's.

If you plan on keeping it, get a throttle body fuel injection kit instead of a carb.

Not cheap at $1600 to $2000, but should help with running.
