I have a 95 HR Ford F53 with I believe the E40D trans. I want to change the trans filter but cannot find a drain plug on trans pan. I found one on the converter. Should I drain the converter first? How much fluif will be in the pan when I drop it? ANY better way to do this.
Thanks in advance for an help.

You have to remove the trans pan to drain the fluid. Be prepared for 4-5 qts. Loosen all the bolts slightly but only fully loosen the rear bolts. This will help fluid drain to rear of pan. Slowly remove the rear most pan bolts, but leave the front bolts somewhat snug. As you remove all the rear and side bolts, the fluid should be draining at rear of pan, then start slowly loosen the remaining front bolts until the rear of the pan tilts down far enough to drain all the fluid, then remove pan for servicing. I would suggest draining the torque convertor last.

Use a BIG pan to catch the oil under the transmission pan. It is a messy job.

Install an in-line filter in the return line and you won't have to change the pan filter again ( just a screen anyway) Ford part #motorcraft FT-167 $46.27 NAPA (same filter) 1-8514 $22.49

tln1947, You can minimize the mess, by folowing these tips.
First, if you pull the dipstick, and drain the converter first, it will remove most of the fluid in the pan. Then Remove the pan and filter.
Just a small note, if your filter is needing replacement, the trans probably is too. Transmissions don't shed enough junk, to plug up a filter unless there is something terribly wrong. The idea of the filter in most auto's, is to keep out the little they do shed, from the pump and valve body.
You will be money and time ahead to skip the filter and just drain and fill.

The previous owner of my coach installed a drain plug in the trans pan. A welcome sight when it comes due for service.
