After much procrastination, I got around to replacing my thermostat. It did the trick. My engine had been running exceptionally cool, at least according to the guage. Mpaton responded to my post that it may have been my thermostat sticking open and that certainly seems to have been the case.

On a recent trip, the temp needle stayed pretty much centered in the guage after the initial warm up. It used to hang more around the bottom of the possible range and fluctuate a good deal. Although I can't tell a difference in performance, steady and normal temperatures must be better for the engine all around.

Thanks to everyone.

I hope you put in a 193-195 thermostat or your MPG will be lower and it will run rich if it is a colder thermostat.

subford,

The Motocraft thermostat that I removed looked original and was labeled 192 degrees. The closest replacement I found was 195 degrees. It must be happy with that because the temp. guage hangs right in the middle or slightly less. I didn't think to check the mileage.

Thanks for the tip.
