Northern Virginia Mechanic Needed

The alternator in my 31-foot Class C 2004 Itasca Spirit -- E-450 chassis/V-10 6.8L -- went kaput halfway to Baltimore on my trip to Chicago (via Atlantic City). Looks like GS Extended Warranty will pay for the fix and GS Roadside Assistance will tow it to where it needs to go for service.

But where? Ford dealers here don't work on RVs and my usual mechanic doesn't have the space, either.

Can anyone suggest a good "under-the-hood" tech?

I'm driving out to Chicago the old fashioned way -- in a *gasp!* automobile -- so I've got a couple of weeks to address this.

Would appreciate any suggestions.

If your Ford engine battery is charged up you can drive to where someone can remove the alternator and you or them can take it to a good rated shop that rebuilds starters and alternators. Just don't use any headlights or chassis air conditioning. That will run down your battery without a working alternator. This engine is out in the open to work on, it's not like working on a motorhome. The alternator rebuild shop may also be set up to remove it from your class C E-450.

I hear you, Dwight. Problem is, most repair shops don't have the space in their parking lot for an RV. Others, like one Ford dealer I talked with, has the space, but the owner said "No more RVs" after paying to repair several that were damaged while sitting on his lot.
