Have 97 National with 460 ford. Cannot find OBD to connect Scangauge. Have pulled all instrument panels, searched around steering wheel shaft, no connector. Does anyone have a clue?
Thanks
bobfo

The '97 460 did not have OBD II and will not work with a scan gauge.

Correct. It has an OBD I connector, usually found under motor cover in front left of compartment. Send your OBD II scanguage back and get a refund.

I had the same problem with my F-53. Found the OBD-1 plug and a dealer with a reader and subsequently replace the O2 Sensor. Here is a link to the correct reader on Amazon (here). They are getting cheaper since only old F-53 owners and old Mustang owners can use them

I'll post a new thread, but anyone subscribed to this thread may know the answer...

1994 Pace Arrow Vision Ford F53/460 - Check Engine pops ON after several minutes once warm (can reset by switching key off while driving, but back on in several minutes more), can't find the Star Tool (obd1) connector. Anyone know where it is for sure?

Places I've already checked: under the doghouse, behind the grille, inside each wheel well, under the dash - even removed the steering post cover.

Then again, I don't really know what I'm looking for, but I've not found any multi-conductor connectors that are not already connected to something.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What you're looking for is exactly pictured in the post by subford above. It WILL be in the engine compartment, somewhere between the steering column and the engine (because its wires go to both of those places). Look more carefully at the photo and you'll see that it looks like the diagnostic plug IS connected to something. But it's only connected to a dummy socket to protect the plug. To use it you pull it down out of the cover.

ah so desu ka!

like topflite51 said: "usually found under motor cover" - i had already looked in there, but it was much further forward and up higher.

well, now I know it's called the "motor compartment.: ;o) <- patented "winking bozo" smiley.

Thanks mpaton,
will smith

According to what I read in the customer responses, the unit clearly states it only applies up to 1995.........so where does that leave a 1997, OBD 1 or OBD 2 ? just a little unclear. Thanks for the info.

A 1997 460 F53 RV is OBD 1.

In 1995, all passenger cars were required to move to OBD-II. However, trucks over 9,000 gross weight were not included in the requirement. As such, at least the 1997 Ford F53 remained on OBD-I. Just us and the Ford Mustange guys. You can get a scanner on Amazon for even less for OBD I since there are fewer applications.

Here is the scanner on Amazon for the OBD 1 that you need to get.
Amazon.com: Equus 3145 Ford Digital Code Reader: Automotive

You can also buy is at most auto parts stores for $30.00.
O'Reilly Auto Parts has them for about $30.00.

For others like me who have not learned the language of land yachts, and don't know what "engine compartment" means, heres another reference location photo for the OBD1 in older F53 motorhomes.

For me, I don't even know what year my rig was made. Just looked at the registration today. Turns-out it's a 1996.

Refer to photo by subford earlier in this thread for a detail shot.
