Oil Consumption1999 Triton V10 35ft Class A
I just completed a 5000 mile trip, my triton v10 ran beautifully as always. I use only mobil1 5-30 which is recommended for my year before they later went to 5-20. I used a quart around every 800 miles which seemed like a lot. I read somewhere that someone used catrol full synthetic and it used a lot less oil. I was mostly going 65 mph and the weather was moderate temperature. Is this normal and I would welcome any advice from the group. thanks

Oil Consumption1999 Triton V10 35ft Class A
A quart every 800 miles is a lot. I assume you have checked for external leaks and if there are none, If it were mine I would do an oil change and filter change to Shell Rotella 15/40 from Walmart, at about $14 for 4 quarts. I would then monitor the oil useage over the next 5000 miles.
The reasoning behind this is that it's the middle of summer, the engine is 15 years old and the hi detergent diesel oil will clean out any sludge get behind the piston rings. The new oil will get rid of any fuel dilution. The higher viscosity with take a bit of slack out of excessive clearances. If the oil consumption drops then you know you are on the right track.

New oil, higher viscosity is not a bad idea. BUT, be sure that the Rotella does NOT contain any of the zinc (etc.) additives that could affect the cat.
This is a well-known method of destroying a cat.
Also, another consideration may be to use a 'high mileage' oil that contains additives that address any potential or existing internal and external leaks.
I expect that if the owner is using Mobile 1 and changes the oil frequently then his engine should be pretty clean.
I would consider some basics like checking the appearance of the plugs and while they were out, check each cyl compression. Also pvc valve is another good check as mentioned above.
BTW, my 2000 V-10 motor with 48,000 mi does not use ANY oil. My driving is from Pa. to Fla. and back at avg. 60 mph. Just switched from Brad Penn 10W-30 conventional to 5W-30 Syn Blend for my trip in Oct. 6 1/2 qts always brings the oil to the top of the cross-hatch on the dipstick.
Keep us posted.

If you are not overfilling the oil, that's a lot of oil. Are you sure you are putting in the right amount? After it drops the first quart, have you ever driven it another 800 miles?
You don't mention the miles on the engine, is it high? Like others have mentioned, PCV valve changed, oil leaks? Is there any history of running with a damaged or missing air filter?
My 1999 V10 uses less then 1/2 quart in 5000 miles. It has 30,000 miles on it. I just ran thru the mountains of PA, VT, NH and NY, working it hard with no oil use.
I use Walmart regular oil. What ever weight the engine calls for.

As twinboat mentioned make sure you're not over filing the crankcase. The 1999 V10 is supposed to take 6 quarts when changing the filter. However there were a number of them that came from the factory with the wrong dipstick. If you have the wrong dipstick it will show a quart low when it has the proper amount of oil.
If you attempt to bring the level to the full mark on the dipstick the engine will quickly burn it off and send it through the exhaust system. At the rate you're loosing oil it sounds like you may have the wrong dipstick.
Next time you have the oil changed put n 6 quarts with a new filter. Run the engine for few minutes, shut it off and let it set for about 10 minutes. Then check the oil level. If it isn't at the full mark note where it is on the dipstick and make a new mark.
It's important to let the engine set about 10 minutes before checking the oil. Often times it drains slowly from the valve covers and you'll get an inaccurate reading if you check it too soon. I had to let our 2001 set for several minutes before checking the oil. If it was checked right after shut down it would read a quart low. After setting 10 minutes it would be at the proper level.

Mine used 2 quarts on a 3200 mile trip. 1999 also, with high mileage. ODO showing 94000+. 5-30 as well.

"owever there were a number of them that came from the factory with the wrong dipstick. If you have the wrong dipstick it will show a quart low when it has the proper amount of oil"
I believe the correct dipstick has a circular handle on it and the incorrect one has a tee handle. Mine has a tee handle and reads low when it has six quarts of oil.

Hummmmmmm..
There seems to be a lot of V-10's that are using way too much oil. In any one of the above reports I would suggest some basic troubleshooting such as leaks, compression. PVC valve/hose, etc. Also, the dipstick ck is a good idea but if you put in the 6qts, you have a starting point.
Please keep us advised of any efforts / results.
Thanks.

When we traded in our 2001 Adventurer on the F53 chassis it had well over 100,000 miles on the odometer. It never used any oil between changes. If I recall correctly the recommended oil change interval for "severe duty" was 3,000 miles.
