I have my RV dealer over fill my oil twice by putting in 7 quarts of oil.
The first time I did notice it was a little over max mark, but I was already half way to Oregon. In Shamrock Tx I needed to stop for a oil change at a Quicky type place. The manager showed me that after running the engine to check for leaks, one needed to wait a few seconds before checking oil or it would show a little low, until the oil ran back into the case from the over head valve area.
I told my Rv service center to only put 6 quarts in at the oil change. When I got home I found it was once again over the max mark. I was able to crawl under and drain 1 Qt of oil and the level was rite on the max mark.
I called and told them about this for someone is unaware of overfilling the Ford engine.
Now my question is - can just one quart cause blown seals? My engine runs greatand I have not noticed any leaking at this time.

Pardon my loosy grammar on previous post. My dealer seemed to think that the Ford needs seven quarts and fills it that way, or perhaps believes with new filter it requires seven quarts. Hope that is clear now. I have not requested seven quarts and in fact made a point of them only putting in six.

Ray,
I may be oversimplifying the point, but what does your Ford chassis owner's manual say about the oil capacity of your engine?

As a long-time Ford truck owner, I've found the owner's manual is right on the button. If you are correct with 6 quarts (not counting filter change), show the owner's manual to the service writer the next time you take it in for service.

My 2.5 cents worth. Best wishes,

What year is your rig. I know the 1999 had a TSB on the oil dip stick. The one installed had the full marks in the wrong place, causing the overfill condition.

Either place a new mark at the full postition when you've added the 6 quarts, if that's what the manual calls for, or go to a Ford Dealer and buy the new dip stick. I did the second one.

You are correct that it should only take 6 qts including filter. Bob is also correct the the older models had a bad dipstick showing an incorrect fill line. But in your case, the dealer admitted putting in 7 qts. so the dipstick level issue really is the point here.
I would make sure you have the correct dip stick for future purposes however.
I do not know what damage you may or may not have caused with the extra qt.
Someone here may be able to help. In the meantime, I would check with a Ford garage and see. I would definately keep documentation as to the overfill times in case in comes back to haunt you down the road.

It is certainly possible to blow the excess oil out some where. Whether it's into the breather, air filter or a seal. It's also possible or even likely that it did'nt hurt anything, but if I ever overfill my engine more than an 1/8" or so , I drain it back out.
I have 2 Ford PUs. The 4.6 ltr takes 6 qts. and the 5.7 ltr take 7 qts. I've never had a V-10

Thanks for all the thoughts on this over fill condition. I have a 2005 V10 and the owners manual indicates 6Qts.
I think I will just do my own oil changes hench forth, even though I find the endeavor a little messy. I will also know that it has been greased and underside conditions noted. I found a grease boot damaged while under there draining the excess oil. Shame not to take advantage of the dealers attempt to provide good customer relations with these yearly maintenance freebies.
