Overdrive Button Question

Have 1997 Thor 3480 Residency Class A with ford 460. The electronic overdrive button on the gear shift will not stay in and the transmission keeps downshifting (Overdrive Off) unless I hold button in all the time. Engine is then running at
12-1500 rpm higher when overdrive is off. Does anyone know if their is a fuse or solenoid that is causing this condition. ?

Thanks

It is not supposed to stay in. It is a momentary push button normally open.

If you are saying it will stay in OD if you hold the button in then no there is no fuse or solenoid to cause your problem as they would both be in working condition then.

The computer starts out in the OD mode and the light will be out. When you push the button in and release it then the light will be on and you will be in third gear for going down hills or anything else you would need third gear for.

Is the light on when you start out after starting the engine?

If so you might have a bad PCM Computer.

Thanks for the reply,

We only drove about 30 miles going to the resort andeverything worked normal and

light was out unless I pushed in to climb a hill or descend.Three days later on the way home it started downshifting, off light cameon, and every time I pushed the button to go back to overdrive it would takeabout a minute and downshift ( Overdrive off) back and forth, this was on levelfreeway. Eventually when we stopped to fuel I taped a small piece of woodover so it would stay in overdrive for economy.

Sent fr Windows Mail (Overdrive off)

The wire for the OD switch may be chaffing through and inadvertently activating the circuit. Most times it shorts to ground. The area under the upper plastic column cover where the lever pivots from is where to look.

On our 2000 model the wires to the button became pinched inside the steering column. I ended up at the Ford dealer.

Problems with that button is common with Fords. I have heard it is not too difficult to replace. On my 1999 the button worked, but the light did not work. So I just had the assembly replaced. Forgot the price, but I know it was less than $200.
