Gas engines pull in the combustion air.
Attempting to pull in more oxygen deprived air, at higher altitudes, by reducing air filter restriction, probably isn't going to help. The restriction is at the throttle body.
Turbochargers pack more air into the combustion chamber, raising the compression, and will help at altutude. Problem is, to much compression can harm a gas engine, unless designed for it.

…"paper or plastic?"...….filters or shopping bags, I prefer paper--replace my paper air filter every 3-4 years......probably good for longer, filtration-wise, but deterioration due to moisture can be an issue....

turbo dusting
Marjoa; more air flow more HP?, but interesting graph showing pressure drop of KN higher than stock filter. FWIW my airbox has the capped port on the front of the airbox that i removed it gives approx 1/3 more area available for filtering. That port is used in some application for filtering airpump inlet air . Have not experienced any wet weather issues leaving it uncapped . All dusting issues I have ever seen have been diesel issues , concrete cutters or drywaller trucks with air filters removed or air inlet leaks. Jim

I have seen youtube where K&N/ others show no benefits on Dyno, and I know increase engine damage risk, based on simple science and HVAC training/experience, I will leave performance filters to the racers who tear down their engine after every race using some investor's $$? The vehicles in my driveway are vintage, 94, 99 and 05.. and still doing great, but know folks who brag they have never changed belts/ hoses because they never kept a vehicle over 24-months.

I used K&N's on my racing motorcycles, but they were rebuilt yearly at least and much cheaper than a diesel.
