"Scan Gauge"to a '96 F53 460?

Is there a "ScanGauge" That I can hook to a '96. I read somewhere that a guy did but I can't find the link. I'm not set on a scan gauge, is there any performance monitor that will work on a 96 chassis with the 460?

You need an OBD1 reader, which Oreilly sells for about $35. I also got the longer cable for it. I haven't seen and performance meters on the 460. Eddie Elk.

What eddieelk is talking about above is a code reader. If you are asking about a scanner then yes you can hook a scanner to the 460 also.

The code reader is digital read out with memory and the scanner in the link below can be hooked to a PC for read and print out later and has a screen that will display while the engine is running on the road or standing still.

The code reader:

Amazon.com: INNOVA 3145 Ford Digital Code Reader: Automotive

There are some auto part stores that also sell that same code reader but I know my local O'Reilly auto part store did sell them but I think they may have stop selling that one.

I use the Actron Scanner CP9190 for real real-time engine data as it is a Scanner but it will also work as a code reader. It will work with both OBD-1 and OBD-2 pulse other makes and model cars and trucks.

The scanner, note the image on the screen of the scanner below is from an OBD-2 input and it will not put that type image out for OBD-1:

Here is an example of Actron Scanner CP9190 output on a 1994 F53 OBD-1:

Yes the 1996 F53 it will output real time data.

Good information which will help but this was not mentioned. Computer information to the tech world by way of the OBD I or II connector changed in 1996. All cars were OBD II compliant in model year 1996. The Feds to make it easier on the auto industry did not make production vehicles that were not produced in as great a numbers as cars (trucks) comply until a later date. So truck chassis are not OBD II compatable in 96. I don't know exactly when they changed over. That's why you're having a more difficult time with accessing the data stream on a 96.

Just thought some of you might like to know why for future reference.

With the results from the Actron above you do have to do some interpreting. Engine SPD is 848 RPMs. TPS-0.8-V (throttle position sensor) Engine is idling , VSS- (vehicle speed sensor) 0- MPH. I think VPWR (V) 14.2 is your charging voltage from the alternator. I'm sure Subford knows the rest of the outputs.

You did plug in the STI wire to your code read did you not?

If you did and it did not work then ground the STI wire and turn on the key and see if the MIL flashes in the cluster.
If the MIL does not flash then either you have lost power to the PCM Computer or grounds to it. If both the power and grounds are good then I would say you have a bad PCM Computer.

Note on most F53 chassis the ground and power to the PCM Computer run through a plug that is located under the center of the radiator.

Thanks all.. Too bad the OBD1 isn't a little more like the OBDII.. I thought the OBDII was standard on '96 up. Oh well.

1997 was the last OBD1 F53 and some of the 1998 RV's had the 1997 F53 chassis under them so they were also OBD1.
But you do have the data feed from your OBD1. The earlier OBD1 Fords did not even have that. I do not remember the year that the data feed started but I think it was somewhere around 1991. The 1990 460 did not have data feed pins but the 1992 did. You can check for the data pins in the DLC connector to see if you have data feed or not.
They are pin #1 circuit #915 (PK/LB) & pin # 3 circuit #914 (T/O).

I myself prefer the OBD1 over OBD2 as I think they are easier to work with and find out what is wrong with the system.

The DLC Connector:

Thanks Bill - yes I did plug the STI wire in. But I'll go thru the list you provided. Thanks again
