I have been researching replacing the in tank fuel pump on my '97 f53 as a preventive maintenance item. The info I am finding is confusing, hoping someone will have an answer.
I think it is common knowledge the fuel pump may go out in a pre-1997 f53 at any time. I understand there was a turbine fuel pump update from Ford that was installed in production somewhere between 1996 to 1999.
Does anyone know the date when the new style fuel pump was installed in production by Ford
My chassis build date is 10-1997

Hi John, I'm not sure when Ford began using the updated fuel pump, however for some reason I was thinking it was on the 1999 model wide track F53 Super Duty Chassis. I could be wrong though as often I am--LOL

Should you decide to replace your pump, I would highly recommend replacing the rubber fuel line from the tank to the generator. I believe the fuel line to the engine is metal, but if there's a rubber connection between it and the tank connection I would replaced it also.

Recently we had to drop our tank to replace the fuel line to the generator as it developed splits in the line and the generator fuel pump was unable to pull fuel from the tank.

If your in-tank fuel pump was one of those prone to failure, I would definitely replace it before taking any extended trips.

Best of luck with your decision.

I had an email from Ford, in response to a request I had made, that stated the last of the defective fuel pumps in F53's was installed in October of 96. I no longer have that email, as it and many others were lost in a HD crash. Subsequent requests have not resulted in any answers of any kind on this subject.

I have a 97 chassis, whose build date was December of 97, I am banking on the letter being accurate. Hopefully it is. If not, that's what I have Coachnet for.

Thanks David,
This is the kind of info I was looking for. I know that I still am taking a chance on a fuel pump that is 12+ years old, but even with roadside assistance I feel better knowing (at least thinking) I have the turbine fuel pump.
During my reseach your name popped up a couple times, so glad you replied

Some years ago we were traveling in Oregon with our truck camper and Ford crew cab with an oversize (50 gal) rear tank. The tank was an after market tank that I had installed. The in tank fuel pump quit in the middle of an intersection. Tow trucks were booked up for hours. You have no idea what PITA it is to park in an intersection. We heard all kinds of nifty new swear words. Don't take any chances.
Have fun!

If you are not the original owner maybe the previous owner has had it replaced. On another thought, what is to say that the new one won't fail after installing? We roll the dice everytime we take our toy out.

Fortunately the MH came with all the service records from day one. It was very well taken care of, but no record of fuel pump replacement.

Don't fix it if it ain't broke.

Now that said, I went through 3 fuel pumps on our 1993 Chateau Club Wagon within 4 years. In 97 we got our F250 4x4 SC PSD. No problems with the F.

Yes, I am leaning towards that old adage myself. That's what roadside service is for.
