speedo quit working

2 days ago, while on a short trip, my speedo, cruise overdrive and odometer quit working, then after about 20 miles started working again. I have a 2000 Holiday Rambler vacationer with the Ford v10 and about 18000 miles on it. this happened to me on a long trip several months ago and the diagnosis was the vehicle speed sensor on top of the differential. That time, the tranmission went into a default gear (4th, I think) but this time it was only the speedo, cruise, odometer and overdrive. Loose connection? anything else that may cause this?

Yes, sorry, the days of a speedo working for me are long since past.

Hard to diag without a scan tool but I would first check the VSS. There may be more than one, usually the speedo head gets it's information from a VSS in the transmission. The sensor in the rear diff should be a WSS for the ABS.

Check the connection and wiring back at the differential.

My understanding is that in your 2000 model year, that is the only VSS.

Lookup the part by VIN and see if there is 1 or 2 and where it is.

Not much diagnosis required, all those items are powered by a single fuse.

Check that the fuse is in properly and not weakened by overloading, I.E. melted but not blown.

It used to a pretty widely used dodge with Ford U-Haul trucks around here. Rate per day is very very low, but the mileage charge was outrageous, with no free miles. The simple, but unscrupulous, solution was to drive a short distance then pull out fuse # 13 (on an F series back then) until just before they returned the truck.

A friend had a U-Haul outlet back then, he made a boatload of bucks by putting wheel hub odometers behind hubcaps on his trucks then charging the true mileage when the truck was returned.

You have three speed sensors on your 2000 Holiday Rambler vacationer.

Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
On vehicles equipped with 4-wheel anti-lock brake systems (4WABS), the vehicle speed signal is generated by the rear anti-lock brake sensor and sent to the 4WABS module. The 4WABS module sends the vehicle speed signal via circuit 679 (GY/BK) to all systems that require a vehicle speed signal input.

The electronic speedometer (17255) receives a speed signal from the 4WABS module.

You do not have the systems that post #4 & #6 refer to. So disregard those post as they refer to the 1998 and older F53 that used the older POSM & had the VSS mounted on the E Brake. In that F53 system the POSM had no control over the transmission, speed control & the PCM Computer. That F53 system also did not have the Anti-Lock Brake system.
