I suspect the clicking sound you are hearing is actually the starter selenoid. I would replace it and they are cheap. You should be able to get one from just about any auto parts store.

you didnt say if ford or gm. If it is ford. solonoid away from starter. dont know the exact location, but some one will jump in. If gm, it is on the starter. likely would have been changed with starteer. Definately solonoid

See, I learn something every day. F or ford. anyway the solonoid will be located on firewall or fenderwell not far from the starter. have someone turn key and listen to hear clicking. As stated, cheap and easy to change.

Sounds like the solenoid, but before you yank it... make sure you have good power to it. I had an issue where the ignition key barrel (the thingy you put the key in) was worn and not providing good continuity, so the solenoid wasn't getting proper juice and would just "tick" (just like if you run the battery down).

I had the same thing on my last trip in My F53.
It got to a point that it would not start just click.
I put my test light on the starter relay and it had power going in and none going out when it clicked.
So I put my spare starter relay on the inside of the doghouse and away we went.

Yes you have a bad starter relay, your starter solenoid should be fine.

Here is what the thing inside looked like when I got home and took it apart:

Make sure you have oil in it and bypass the oil pressure switch and see if it will fire then.

The way it works is it has to crank until the oil pressure closes the oil pressure switch and then the Ignition will start to work. Do not flood it while trying to start it before the oil pressure comes up

Last I checked FORD used an 'External" starater solenoid (External to the starter) and yes, they have been known to go bad.. In fact I have a war story about that, but not today.

Nope, on the OP F53 the Solenoid is mounted on the starter and also on all Ford trucks made in the 90's.

The starter relay location is in the photo above in this thread.

A FORD Starter with gear reduction:

1994 is the same as the 1996 diagram below:
