Swap to alloy Rims on F-53 (19.5 tires)

Hi all,

it's been a while since I last posted but I wanted to give some update on a modification we've just done.

After having had issues with handling and tire balancing I've decided to swap the crap steel rims on our Winnebago Brave 27B (16K lbs chasis) against the Alcoa alloy rims. The old rims where not even not round but had side to side movement on the balancer (some worse than others).

What a difference in handling and comfort this made. The coach now rides like a descent vehicle and tracks 100% straight and passing trucks don't even bother the beast any more. Whoever is considering the CHP should really look into this upgrade as it does fix the actual issue and not masking it - just my thought.

The price wasn't that bad - about $2K for the 4 rims and new caps. So I would put this personally high on the to do list for any owner with the 195 tires.

Reiner

Would like to see some pics. What vendor did you deal with? Did they install liners on the rear to separate the steel inner wheel from the alloy outer?. Thanks

No liner. I used Les Schwab to do the swap.

Are the Alcoa wheels 7.5" wide? The narrow 6.75" steel OEM wheels were a cheaper shortcut for Ford and the motorhome mfgr. Is the space between the rear dual tires now narrower?

They are 6.75 - same as the steel - space between rears is the same.

I wasn't aware of a 19.5x6.75 offering from Alcoa. It has been discussed here before. Have a part number (should be stamped into the rims)?

Do you have a part number for the wheels ? All I can find is 6” not 6.75” wheels.

Checked Alcoa's website and they do not list a 19.5 x 6.75 wheel .
Called buytruckwheels.com and the very knowledgable gentleman I spoke with (Paul) told me that in fact there is no 19.5 x 6.75 wheel in aluminum with a 10 on 225mm pattern.
They offer a kit with 4 19.5 x 6 Alcoa wheels with 2 of the same size steel inners for the rear with lug nuts and center caps for $1,724.00 with free shipping.
Paul said they sell a lot of these kits and have had good results on RV's .

The Goodyear 670 745/70/19.5 G rated tires (on newer Ford F-53 chassis) specify 7.5" rims. Ford uses 6.75" wide rims. Any wheel peddler who doesn't know that the hubs for the 19.5 wheels have 8 lugs in a specific diameter and circle with a hub mount. Run from any sales person who does not know the proper F-53 wheel mounting specs and size. If less than one person per year thinks of upgrading their steel wheels to Alcoa aluminum wheels that may account for why there are none available. It seems that any competent machine shop with CNC equipment should be able to make the proper size blank wheels into wheels that fit a Ford F-53 chassis with the 19.5 wheel size from the factory.

The wheels on my new (2018) F53 Winnebago are 19.5” with a 10 on 225mm bolt circle , not 8 lug.

You are right any good properly equipped wheel shop could turn out a wheel from a blank but at what cost ?
Also I don’t think a pair of 7.5” wheels would fit in the rear wheel wells.

Petewolf, you are right, I counted 10 lugs on my wheels. I guess I will have to double check my memory in the future.
