Transmission question

Sorry, this may be bumped to a better place and I don't know where to put it.

I have a 1987 Class B F250 Ford Intervec Falcon 190 with a 351W engine. It has 60,000 miles on it, and is a workhorse. And I've had problems with transmissions before. And transmission shops, some of whom seem to have folks drinking the fluid.

If this transmission, which I assume is the stock, standard transmission, goes out, what would be a good replacement? I have no idea if I would be better off sticking with the stock 3 speed auto or if there is a sturdy 4 speed which would fit easily. I don't know, and I don't like being at the mercy of the folks in the transmission shops I've visited. I KNOW a good one, great shop, it's just in Portland and I'm not a good part of the time.

Any suggestions along this line will be printed out and saved with the rest of the documents on this for when it is needed. And I'll appreciate it no end.

Thanks.

The transmission you have is the FORD C6.
This is a very strong transmission and you need to replace it with another C6.
The only four speed that you could use is the AOD and it is not very strong and would not last very long behind a 351.

To use the newer E4OD on a stock install you would a new computer and all new wiring harness. That would be a very big job.
OR
There is also a after market transmission box that could run the E4OD if you wanted to go that route.

But I think a new C6 would be much cheaper and a better way to go.

I agree. When I had my E40D rebuilt, the tech said he included in the rebuild all the "upgrades" that were then available for the tranny. I don't know what they were. Perhaps there are existing upgrades for the C6 that can be added when yours is rebuilt, too.
