Had transmission service done at Ford service in Florida. I explained about overheating problems. I got it back it shifted great through all gears. 1200 miles later in South Carolina on I 95 overdrive light started flashing but there was no loss of power and shifting was fine. Pulled off and checked fluid level it was brown and burnt. Shut off engine and restarted no more flashing light and still shifting fine no slipping or loss of power. the only code i got was 66 transmission over temp. I am still 1000 miles from home and have a month before i need to leave SC. Any advice would be great
Last year on our return trip we climbed many mountains in Georgia and Pennsylvania and no problems at all stayed parked for 6 months at a job in NH then overheating started after that

Hi nhcouple, if i was me I'd have that transmission fluid changed. Looking Burnt and brown is not good, IMHO it's finished. It's quite possible during the servicing that they did not change the fluid, just did the repair and put you back on the road. If everything is working good I'd have the fluid changed.
Cheers
Willey
PS parking a Ford for 6 months is not good. It will punish you. I did that in 2007 and the brake calipers seized, $1500 later and we got on the road again.

Contact Mike Arnau of Palmetto RV's at (843) 343-5840. He can point you to a good shop.

Called Mike Arnau and he reccomended Holt Transmission in North Charleston. I spoke with the owner and made an appointment. We drove up yesterday and the manager checked for codes and found none. I asked for a fluid change and he said no because of liability he wanted to pull the trans out and inspect it for 500.00. I asked for a total to reassemble and install after many try to get a total price he finally said it could be 3000.00. Then i talked to one of his techs he thinks its torque converter lock up. He still says he wont change the fluid. it still shifts good and i have 900 miles to home so im changing the fluid myself and heading out.

You do not use Type "F" fluid in an E4OD Transmission.
The fluid for it is Mercon 5.

I would just take it to another Ford dealer and tell them to change the fluid; don't get into anything else. If they ask, just say "it's been quit a while and I know you are supposed to have it done once in a while"

Changed the fluid and filter today fluid was brown with very slight burn smell
no debris in pan or filter
no friction material or metal
Going to take a chance on New Hampshire when the weather breaks up that way
Planning to unhook the toad when we hit the mountains
Thanks for all your replies

Only an educated guess but a possible blockage in the Trans. cooler line or the cooler itself. Maybe something floating in the fluid which tends to clog at a bend, fitting or internal part of a hose. You might want to disconnect and reverse flush the cooler and lines. Then flush foward to check volume of flow. A reputable trans shop can do this reasonably.

We made it to NH. I changed the fluid, hose clamped a multimeter temperature probe to the return line from the cooler, and added a 10 Inch cooling fan to the cooler and ran a toggle switch,. temp ran 130 to 160 with cooling fan on. It shifted and and pulled even with our toad hooked up but still burning up transmission fluid. We unhooked our toad before the mountains in NY on I 84 and wife followed. she told me brake lights went on and off often. after more investigation early fords with E4OD transmissions brake lights cause torque converter to unlock causing the overheating problem. tomorrow we will diagnose the brake light switch short. it still shifts like a new transmission,
